Spit Or Swallow?

After chewing a piece of gum, do you spit it out or swallow it?

I swallow (my gum). Several people have commented to me in the past that they think it’s gross. I don’t understand. I don’t chew up a piece of licorice and then spit it in the garbage. Or toast, or pickles, or anything for that matter. Why do some people view gum differently from other food items we eat?

We’ve all heard the myths about chewing gum. No, it doesn’t take 7 years to digest. In fact, gum digests just as fast as anything else we swallow and is not harmful.

  1. This source isn’ t reliable. it takes 3 days for gum to pss through your digestive system because the gum base can’t be digested.

  2. I realize I’m about three years late, but I’ll answer your question anyway.

Eating a stick of gum every once and awhile is not going to harm you. Even chewing and swallowing a pack over a twenty-four hour period is unlikely to harm you. Of course, I am assuming that you’re a healthy individual with no history of digestive issues. Spitting the gum out, however, is the better choice.

Like all vices, moderation is key. If you eat great gobs of gum within a short period, you could very well get a bowel obstruction. Repairing such a thing can require anything from heavy-duty laxatives to a rather unpleasant surgery. A great deal of the time, however, if you swallow too much gum, you’ll know as you’ll be puking it up.

  3. Im addicted to gum..if I have a pack of gum, its gone with in an hour. Its only if its with me or around when I end up eating almost all of it…when one peice loses its flavor, I just swallow it and put another in my mouth..all though sometimes I do spit, just cause I dont want to go to the hospital again. I went to the hospital when I was 10 years old…they thought it was my penisides or however u spell it, but found out that it was because I had swallowed too much gum..the doctor told me that swallowing gum is not healthy…and if I kept doing it..it could affect me inside. He had a lady before that had to get a hole in the side of her stomach and a bag attached for her waste and her pee…she no longer could pee normally or poo normally…and had to be operated on…ALL from chewing gum…true story….

BUT i still chew gum..and im fine…but I give myself breaks now and then… and stay away from the chew

  4. I too appear to have a problem. If I have gum, I eat it.I was recently give a bag of 60 pieces and I ate it all within 3 days! I don’t do that often however, if gum is near, gum should fear! Cause I’m a beast who has to eat it. How sick am I? And how sick can this make me?

  6. Okay after reading Michelle’s it’s hard for me to believe wither that’s even true or false.

I just went over 16 websites about gum chewing and 7 were medical or M.D.’s and all said. “”””””Gum doesn’t stay in your system longer than anything else does. True the ingredients make it hard to digest it, but it will not to your side.”

I as well love gum. Go through it like crazy, and I have serious medical dieses Cystic Fibrosis. When I go and get x-rays, cat scans, and colonoscopy which are quit often. When they do this they look for things on the side walls and other problems. If they saw something they would be sure to tell me for my well being!?And as well I take lasted as an hourly Phil so that would in deed clear me up.

And yesterday … I look at poop for health reasons and I swear I saw minty green chunk in there… meaning I thought it was gum.

  7. The only time it’s harmful is when you are very young. I have been swallowing gum for many many years. It may not be the greatest thing to do, and I have heard that if you swallow too much at one time, it can cause problems breathing, chest pains. All in all, there isn’t any harm in swallowing it – it is out of your system in 2 days.
