  1. Nick, Nick, Nick—(as I wag my head in disappointment)—haven’t you been watching ESPN Sports Science?

    So I won’t ruin it in case you haven’t watched the video on this one, but I will say that regardless of which is actually faster, baseball is all about psychology, especially in regards to umpires’ calls.

    I believe diving gives you an edge because the umpire might think you’re trying harder, and therefore deserve the call. (Not that those exact thoughts go through their heads.) It could also unnerve the first baseman, maybe causing him to drop or fumble the throw (long shot, but worth it maybe).
