Nick, Nick, Nick—(as I wag my head in disappointment)—haven’t you been watching ESPN Sports Science?
So I won’t ruin it in case you haven’t watched the video on this one, but I will say that regardless of which is actually faster, baseball is all about psychology, especially in regards to umpires’ calls.
I believe diving gives you an edge because the umpire might think you’re trying harder, and therefore deserve the call. (Not that those exact thoughts go through their heads.) It could also unnerve the first baseman, maybe causing him to drop or fumble the throw (long shot, but worth it maybe).

You don’t see sprinters diving across the finish line. 😉

I still argue it’s appropriate for baseball, maybe 1 time out of 100.

Even the announcers on TV laugh at the players each time they do this.

Nah, those are the TBS posers. You don’t hear the former players laughing.
