If Things Look Funny…

Over the next week I’ll be making a lot more tweaks to the design of the site. If you notice anything that looks funny or out of place, leave a comment so I can check it out. Currently I’m using Firefox and IE 6 for testing, so if you are using another browser let me know how the site looks.

Update: Header images for the GanGreen the BluePrint styles are up!

The Photos Are Missing

They weren’t kidnapped, I just got fed up with using Gallery to manage my photos, so I ditched it. I’ve found something that looks pretty sweet and should be a nice replacement. Markku is developing a PHP-based application for publishing photos and I like the looks of it. He is either caling it iPAP or SPAM, I’ve seen it called both in different places. Personally I like iPAP better…SPAM is used for too many other bad things, such as that nasty canned “meat” and the flood of messages in my INBOX. Now if only I could get my hands on a test version of his software. πŸ’‘

Look for the photos to be back up and running when I get back from my trip.

Off To Sacramento

Later today I’ll be taking off for Detroit and then flying out to Sacramento, CA. I haven’t done laundry or packed a thing, so I’ve got a few things on my “To Do List” for this morning! For the next week, the site will be a little “dead”, but I do have dial-up access in the hotel so I’ll check things at least once a day.

A few things I need to do on the site when I get back:

  1. Create header images for the BluePrint and GanGreen styles.
  2. Create a new favicon.
  3. Work on a few more WP Plugins.
  4. Clean up some code.
  5. Get a new photo gallery up and running.

Now you have something to look forward to…right?

New Styles

If you notice on the “Main” section of the sidebar on the right there are now different styles that can be viewed for the site. There is just something about the GanGreen one that I don’t like…I need to change one of the colors or something once I figure out what is bothering me. I’m having some problems on the photos page and with saving the styles so that the one you choose is used on the other pages of the site.

Update: Whichever style you now select should be reflected across every single page on the site. πŸ˜€ I had attempted to use Alex’s Style Switcher Plugin for WP, but no matter how much I tried to hack the code, it didn’t want to work on the static pages of my site. So I used an old style switcher that is much simpler. I did have to add some PHP code to my gallery to make it work there, but it’s runnin well now…I think.

Update #2: I’ve updated the GanGreen style and I think it’s 100% better than it was.

Update #3: Google Ads now change to match the styles.

Time For A Design Change

It’s been over 6 months since I’ve been running my blog, which also means 6 months for the design. It’s time for a change! This design is getting old on my eyes and it has a few problems that have crept in recently. Most noticeable is the problem with the Google ads. They like to flash at the top of the page when the site is loading or when using the tabbed sidebar. I’m really not quite sure what the new design will be…hell, I don’t even have any cool ideas right now. I need a burst of creativity to hit before I get started, but I also want to get a new design as soon as possible. I’d set a goal for the end of the month, but I’m going to Sacramento for a week so that won’t work. I’ll say by June 14th a new design will be alive and kicking!

Speaking of new designs…my friend David Branson has become a WordPress user and will be working on a design of his own. Right now he’s using one of the stylesheets created for the WP community in place of boring default one. When you get a minute check out his site, Deacon Blue.

Advertisements

You may have noticed ads appearing in different places across the web site. I know…I usually don’t like ads either, but I’m living by myself now, so every little bit of extra money will help me continue leading the lifestyle I’ve grown accustomed to. If you have any comments or suggestions about them, please let […]

Site Changes

Over the past few days you may have noticed a few changes to the site. I removed the Shout Outs from the sidebar. I was the only one ever shouting so I figured it wouldn’t be missed. With them gone, the pages should load a little (fraction of a second) quicker. The other change is that I added a little hack next to the date/time of a post. It displays how long ago the post was made, which is useful for any visitors that are in a different time zone. Instead of figuring their offsets from EST to see how long ago a post was made, they can simple read in between the parenthesis.

I’m really happy with the way the site has come together over the past few months. My goal from the start was to keep it simple, but with a lot of functionality. I think I’ve succeeded so far and from the consistent increase in the number of visitors, so must others.

If you have any suggestions or criticisms that might help the site…I’m all ears.

Backup!

Never underestimate the importance of a backup! I ran some upgrades to WordPress and all of my dates and times got screwed. I didn’t panic, but I restored a backup of my database, upgraded again, and then re-added all of the missing posts and comments since the last backup.

If I would have backed up right before the upgrade (like I normally do) I would have saved a lot of time. Lesson learned…
