Integrating Twitter

I’ve been using Twitter more and more just because it’s so simple to post quick little updates. I just installed the Twitter Tools plugin which will create a daily post here at MDV from my Twitter Updates. These daily posts (if I have any Tweets that day) will go into the quickie category and make things easier on me. Hopefully it’ll help to keep some fresh content on the site. Let me know what you think.

Update: Looks like it already created an update from yesterday’s tweets. I like it!

Spammers Attack

Over the past week I’ve had a problem with spammers hitting my comment form hardcore both here and at 2 Hole Cards so hard it was crashing the web host server. They had to disable the sites and it looks like the spammers have moved along. Just to help out for future attacks, I’ve upgraded […]

No WWW

I posted a couple of months ago about dropping the www from URLs and have been a supporter of it for much longer. All of my sites have been www free for as long as I can remember. The http://www.xxxx.com URLs will redirect to the one without www. If you’re using WordPress and have been […]

Stop Comment Spam and Trackback Spam

With Akismet from Automattic or more specifically Matt Mullenweg. I just purchased a Pro-blogger license for an entire year and installed the WordPress plugin on all of my blogs. I removed my other spam prevention plugins, turned off the Comment author must have a previously approved comment option in WP, and even deleted my comment spam word blacklist. That’s how confident I am in Akismet as a spam prevention service. We’ll see how it works out. I doubt I’ll regret it.

When a new comment, trackback, or pingback comes to your blog it is submitted to the Akismet web service which runs hundreds of tests on the comment and returns a thumbs up or thumbs down.

If you’re running a WordPress powered blog I suggest you give it a try and support those who are behind it. They’ve done a lot for the blogosphere over the last 2 years.

WordPress Plugins: Trackback And Pingback Moderation

These two plugins basically do the same thing, but I wanted to keep them seperate. When you turn one on, it will automatically place either all NEW trackbacks or all NEW pingbacks (depending on the plugin) into the comment moderation queue. It’s meant as a simple way to keep the spammers from getting these onto your site without you first approving them.

Note: This does not do anything for all of the old trackbacks/pingbacks that have already been added to your site.

WordPress Plugin: Card Converter

Card Converter is a WordPress plugin with poker bloggers in mind, but it can be used by anyone who would like to display playing cards in posts and comments. It will take card abbreviations such as Ad (meaning Ace of diamonds) and convert it to a CSS graphical-like representation of the card. Inspiration for the plugin came from Chris Halverson‘s Pokerhand plugin and the CSS cards on the World Poker Tour Fan Site.

The plugin has moved to the WordPress Plugin Repository. All development and files will be available there from now on.
