I'm Losing 2 Teeth And Getting a Dental Implant

Doesn’t it sound like fun?

I finally hooked up with a local dentist after visiting the one in my hometown for years. I’ve been having some problems on tooth #19 (lower back left area) and the decay is so bad it would be a miracle to save the tooth. So I’ve decided to go with a dental implant instead of spending the money on a root canal and everything and then I might still need the dental implant in a couple of years.

For a dental implant, basically what they do is pull the tooth and then put a titanium screw in the jaw bone where the roots of the tooth were. It can take 8-10 months for the bone to grown in and around the threads of the screw to form a solid foundation. Once that’s ready, a titanium cap it put on the screw where a crown can then be attached. (Photos of dental implants and steps involved.)

I’m also getting tooth #15 taken out because it’s nonfunctional, meaning it doesn’t bite against another tooth. Because of my under bite, this tooth had previously worked with the lower left wisdom tooth, which was removed last year. As long as I’m going to an oral surgeon to work on the left side of my mouth, might as well get this one taken care of as well.

Here’s a lesson folks…don’t get hooked on pop like I did when I was younger. Even though I quit drinking pop a couple of years ago, I’m paying for it now with dental work!

Xylitol Helps With Tooth Decay

Ever heard of Xylitol? It’s a natural sweetener which has shown very promising results in the area of tooth decay. Xylitol helps to prevent tooth decay and has even been shown to reverse some decay. I learned about it at my dentist’s office the past two times I’ve had my teeth cleaned, but finally got around to looking it up the other day. For more info check out Xylitol.Org.

Yesterday I ordered a couple of products made by Xlear Inc. in their Spry Dental Defense System. I went with the toothpaste and a sampler pack of the chewing gum. It’s recommended that several small exposures to Xylitol per day work the best so I figured those two purchases would do the trick.

Xylitol is showing so much promise it is being used by some of the more recognizable companies. Yesterday at Walmart I picked up a pack of Trident gum with Xylitol and it tastes great.

With the problems I’ve had with my teeth I figured I might as well start doing what I can. I also ordered an Oral-B Triumph 9450 toothbrush to replace the cheap battery powered ones I’ve been using.

Super Bowl Weekend

My Super Bowl weekend couldn’t have started out any worse. On the ride up to Rogers City I hit a porcupine and it cracked up my front bumper. I’m going to try to get it fixed without replacing it. I talked to one of the body shops back home and they said they would be able to take off the bumper, grind it down, and glue it. Roughly $300-$400 to have that done. He also said probably over $600 to just replace it. Our deductible is $500, so I really like the $300 range a lot more. If it was my car, I just rig it up with some brackets underneath or something, but I have to turn in the lease in less than two months. Great timing!

My Dad got me all excited about the new vehicle again. He told me that the dealer who is looking for my ride found one exactly like I wanted, but it was $1000 more than I wanted to pay. He said there is a lot of time and if he gets one with a little more mileage it shouldn’t be a problem (this one had 24,000). You’re probably wondering what I’m getting right? It’s going to be a 2003 GMC Envoy SLT 4×4 with carbon metallic as the color. Carbon metallic is a really dark gray and looks sweet on these vehicles. It’s really going to be a nice ride. I can’t wait!

The Weeks Ahead

Over the past few days, I’ve been quiet on the site again. I’ve been busy studying for my test, which paid off. August is going to be a busy month for me, so I just wanted to warn everyone that I won’t have as much time for quality posting.

Tomorrow I’m heading up to Rogers City for the Nautical Festival. We like to call it the “Naughty Fest!” It’s pretty much non-stop drinking for 4 days. Pre-partying with a keg at someone’s house, walking to the beer tent, bullshitting all night, and dancing occassionally. After the tent closes, everyone walks to the bar for more drinking and bullshitting. It’s one of the funnest weekends of the year for me. Then on Monday I have a dentist appointment before I come back to Saginaw.

No big plans for the week after I come back, but on the 15th I’m heading to Philadelphia for a SQL training class. My friend Lindsay is going along for the trip, so it should be fun. We’ll get back to Michigan late on the 20th. Then on Sunday (22nd), I’m driving up north for a 3 day golfing trip. This might be my 2nd funnest couple of days of the year. (I like the word funnest!)

There are 20 guys that go and we play 36 holes a day at Boyne Highlands. They are great courses that are always in great shape. Each round of 18, we are paired up with different guys and there is always some type of competition with cash prizes. Every par 3 has a closest to the pin contest too. The highlight of the trip is the Hackers vs. Whackers match play. We play 10 guys to each team, and play 5 matches for a trophy and bragging rights. It’s just an all around great time.

I’m looking forward to the rest of the month.

Drill Another One

Just got back from the dentist…AGAIN! I had another big cavity filled to use up the rest of my dental insurance for the year. I hate going to that place, but it’s my own damn fault. If I would take better care of my teeth, I wouldn’t have these problems. Yesterday I couldn’t eat on the left side of my mouth because of the two big cavities I had filled and today I can’t eat on the right side because of this one. It’s so much fun!

My brother’s team beat Boyne City last night 58-50, so it’s back to Cheboygan tonight for the championship game. They play against Cheboygan who beat St. Ignace yesterday. I think his team will be out matched (or should I say out coached?), but you never know in high school sports. At least it gets me out of the house and out of this town for a few hours.
