Photo Challenge: Variations on a Theme

This week’s challenge can be taken in several different directions. I decided to snap a quick photo and play around with simple image adjustments based on the following idea from the post.

You could also opt for a series of shots showing the same place, person, or object in slightly different light (literally or figuratively, as the case may be).

First, the original.

After duplicating the image several times in the iOS Photos app (to keep the original) I started making quick edits. I spent 5-10 minutes on this and decided to go with 4 variations.

I don’t know anything about touching up photos, but this shows how much you can change the story your images tell with very little effort.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

I’m going to try adjusting my images more often.

Photo Challenge: Silence

When I see an animal track in the snow I often think back about 20 years to rabbit hunts with my Dad. When you’re in the middle of the woods during winter, you don’t hear a thing. Or at least that’s how it is in Northern Michigan. Sound doesn’t travel because the trees are covered in snow. It’s the purest silence I’ve ever experienced. Maybe the most peaceful bit of nature too.

Photo Challenge: Growth

As part of my daily posting, I’m going to complete The Daily Post Photo Challenge each week.

Whether you take photos with an iPhone or a full-frame DSLR, you’re welcome to participate in our photo challenges. A new theme is announced every Wednesday.

I’ll give myself 2 weeks for each challenge in case I need to come up with an idea for the theme. To keep me on track, I use a repeating reminder.

The first theme for 2018 is growth. I don’t do New Year’s resolutions, so I’ll share a little journey.

The other night, as I was soldering the project HackerBox #0026 I kept thinking back to my first attempt at soldering, when I put headers on a Raspberry Pi Zero. I remember being hesitant and scared, because I was teaching myself how to solder. I was worried I’d either fry the board or burn myself. It felt like it took forever. Everything worked though.

That was only 13 months ago, but it feels like years. I’ve gained a lot of experience with the soldering iron and now know I had nothing to be afraid of. Learning new skills can be scary.

“What if I screw up?”

“What if I’m no good?”

Don’t let the voices of fear prevent you from trying, especially if it’s something you’ve always wanted to do. Do some prep work, read up on the topic, and dive in. Or find someone with experience to help and teach you.

Here’s the back of the circuit board I soldered this week. A lot more complex, but it was second nature.

Is there something you’ve always wanted to learn? What’s stopping you?

1 Year of Daily Posting

A year ago I started my blog post streak, which made yesterday the 365th day in a row I’ve published something here on nick.blog!

We’ve been testing posting streak achievements/notifications internally for WordPress.com and hopefully they’ll be ready for a public launch soon.

During the streak I’ve published 473 posts containing 61,776 words, 1,399 links, 509 images, and 137 videos! (code)

Time

The theme for this week’s WordPress.com Daily Post Photo Challenge is Path. As I think back on 2016, my sabbatical stands out the most. Having 3 months off work allowed me to focus on time, which might be our most important, yet undervalued, resource. Once time is gone, it’s gone. Also an appropriate theme as I turn 37 today.
