Keep Your Scrollbars in Chrome

I still don’t understand why browsers started to hide the scrollbar when you’re not scrolling. That’s when a scrollbar is actually useful, so you can quickly jump to specific areas of a page. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve scrolled so the bar would appear and then struggled to click and grab it before it disappeared. I finally had enough of the frustration and found the Rescroller Chrome extension, which keeps the scrollbar visible all the time!

Disable Chrome Notifications

Since switching to Chrome, I’ve been annoyed when sites ask to send me notifications. I never want them. Turns out you can disable them completely.

  1. Visit chrome://settings in the address bar.
  2. Click Show advanced settings at the bottom.
  3. Under Privacy click the Content Settings button.
  4. Scroll down to Notifications and select Do not allow any site to show notifications.
  5. Profit.

Chrome Complaints

The switch from Firefox is almost two weeks old. It’s been ok. Some things I don’t like about Chrome:

  • HTTP auth popup dialogs don’t allow pasting a password via the keyboard. You have to use the mouse. My fault!
  • You can’t drag a tab onto the bookmarks toolbar to bookmark it. You can highlight the address and drag that though.
  • It’s taking longer than expected to get used to doing Google searches from the address bar instead of a dedicated search box.
  • I keep selecting Copy from the right click menu, when I’m trying to Copy Link Address.
  • Clearing the DNS host cache is a pain in the ass. I use my hosts file a lot to load domains from a sandbox server.

Maybe I need to dig around extensions a bit. What are your must haves?

Goodbye Firefox

I’ve been a Firefox user for a long time, but it’s time to throw in the towel. The most common issue I run into is video playback not even starting, but overall the entire browser experience seems to be getting slower. I also run into development issues at work where team members uncover a Chrome bug, where Firefox works fine and as I’d expect it to. Yeah, I know, I should get better at testing. 😉 One recent example is the default behavior in Chrome is to allow a form to be submitted multiple times; double-click the submit button or even keep smashing it and Chrome will send as many requests until your page reloads. Am I the only one who thinks this behavior is really dumb? Firefox doesn’t do this.

The long holiday weekend seems like a good time to make the switch. I looked back to see the first time I mentioned FF on my blog. It was more than 12 years ago, where I mentioned testing in FF and IE6! Times have changed.
