Root of all Evil

I drove back to Saginaw today and just pulled in about an hour ago. I don’t remember seeing so much fog in an afternoon and I had it the whole trip. At least I didn’t hit any animals like I did on the trip up north. I hit a porcupine (pictures) and will have to get my frong bumper ever “rigged up” or replaced. Just what I needed less than 2 months before the lease is up on the vehicle. So we’re talking at least $300. Nothing I can do about it, so it doesn’t pay to go on tilt.

I didn’t think I’d get in any online poker over the weekend, but I got bored and installed Empire Poker on Mom’s computer so that I could work on the 1050 raked hands I needed to clear for their recent bonus. Playing $1/2 6-max it took me 1,600 hands to clear the $150 bonus. In addition to clearing the bonus, I came out 40 BB ahead for an average of 2.5 BB/100 hands. It was a good weekend for the bankroll. If not for a couple of 2-out suckouts in a row, it would have been much much nicer though. That’s poker.

The Streak Continues

Losing streaks suck!

I played some no-limit again last night and the cards are just not coming. I can’t hit a flush draw. Can’t win when I call someone’s bluff. Can’t get someone to fold when they should. It’s very frustrating. But…after winning for the first 2+ months of my new serious play, I figure variance is finally kicking in.

Over Thanksgiving break I had my best day ever at ring games, taking down almost $400 in a few hours of play. My bankroll was sitting near $2400, the highest it has ever been. Over the next two days I managed to give about $300 back and it has continued ever since. I’ve had a few small winning days over these three weeks, but the majority have been losses. I know that I’m going on tilt a little bit here and there, but the cards are just not cooperating. I think my bankroll is down around $1700 right now. It’s been almost a month since I set some goals for my poker game and instead of going forward, I’ve gone backwards.

I’ve tried to switch it up by playing no-limit this week, but that’s not where I play my best, especially when I’m losing. I’m a much better limit player because I can play the odds and my losses are limited by the betting structure. During my Thanksgiving peak I had moved up to $2/4 games and the bad beat jackpot tables at Party Poker. I did well to start, but then hit a brick wall and I don’t think I was quite ready for how fast the bankroll can disapper at the higher limit. I’ve been primarily playing the $1/2 6-max tables and they seem to be my favorites, but I may have to go back to the full 10-seat tables and just grind it out. Tighten up and be aggressive. Back to ABC poker with some SSH in the mix.

Thanks to working for SVSU, I have a long Christmas break from work and I expect to play a ton of poker while I’m up at my parents for almost 2 weeks. I’ll be taking my main computer with me so that I have access to Poker Tracker and all of my software. I’m also going to the casino in St. Ignace for New Year’s Eve, so I’m looking forward to some live play finally. I’m hoping to at least get the bankroll to $3000 or so, but in order to achieve my goals, I really need to get closer to the $4000 mark. We’ll see…

I’ve been reviewing bits and pieces of SSH, which really helps to remember things I had totally forgotten. For instance, protecting a hand by checking the flop and betting the turn, so that some of the draws are not getting the right price to call. It’s these minor leaks in my game that are making the bad cards look worse in the numbers.

I also need to rememeber that poker is just one big long session.

My new goal is to practice focus, concentration, logic, patience, aggresiveness, and THINK.

It's Goal Time

Since getting serious about my poker playing, the bankroll has been doing very well. It seems like yesterday, but it was almost two months ago that I took $130 profit from a year’s worth of playing at UB and added a $300 starting bankroll. Since then, I’ve taken the $300 out and now my bankroll is entirely composed of profits. It’s sitting at about $2,000. I figure it’s time to set some goals for the coming months.

Still Here

I’m still here. Just haven’t played much recently because of some new XBox games. The big tournament that was supposed to be this weekend was canceled because they couldn’t get 10 people. Some other day I guess. Over the weekend I moved up limits and am now playing $1/2 at Party Poker. I had the bankroll to support it and was inspired by Double As’ post a few weeks back. My original plan was to play 10,000 hands at $.50/1 before moving up, but after about 5,500 hands I was over 300 BB to the black so I said why not.

I’m testing out the 1/2 6-max tables and doing pretty well. Well…doing well as far as being ahead for how many horrible beats I’ve taken. I’ve been beaten by runner-runner at least 10 times and in just over 1,000 hands. I’m playing somewhere around 20-22% of the flops at these tables and I’ve gone to the showdown 35% of the time. In a quick (and very guesstimated) calculation I’ve been to showdown about 75 times. Figure in some room where they missed and folded and I’m looking at somewhere around 100 hands. 100 out of 1,000….1 in 10. Runner-runner, according to the odds should hit in the neighborhood of lets say 1 in 45 (if it’s even that good). To make a long story short…these games are lucrative when the odds don’t bite you in the ass. And yes, I know this is a very small sample size to measure any of this, but the point was to show that there is plenty of money to be made there.

I’m curious as to how I should be changing strategy for these short-handed games. My bible, SSH assumes a full table for everything. So far I’ve been using the starting hands they give for a loose table and it seems to be working well. Is this too tight for a 6-max table though? I also try to make sure I get in my value bets and maybe play the middle pair type hands a little more aggresive. I’m very interested to hear what others, who have played these tables, have to say.

Running Better

The cards were running even better than last night and I think the fish like to play on Saturday mornings. After 81 hands, 44 more BB added to the bankroll. This shit is too easy! This hand was my favorite…

Outcome: Hero wins 28 BB.

I probably should have been more aggressive, but I went into call mode because I figured that someone had to have a better hand than one pair. MP2 was raising all the time with garbage so I didn’t put him on anything better than a little pair, but I figured for sure someone else was slowplaying two pair or trips. Three hands later came this hand…
