Photos Are Back

The Photos section of the site is back. It needs a lot of work, but at least it’s there again. I decided to only upload the “important” pictures from the old setup, but I’ll upload new ones as the days go by. It’s a nice and simple interface, which I really like. I’m using SPAM/iPAP to mange the photo albums and it works well. The software needs a lot of improvements, but those will come with time.

Some of the things I would like to see are:

  • Resizing of images on upload.
  • Saving images into folders based on the album, instead of one folder for all of the images.
  • Rotating of images based on EXIF data.
  • Use MySQL or some derivative instead of a flat database file.
  • Better ability for templating. The CSS should be moved out into a seperate file and PHP code should be allowed in the templates.
  • Deleting albums and images doesn’t work quite right yet.
  • Batch uploading. Currently I have to individually choose the images (maximum of eight). I would like to see an option where I could choose a folder and upload everything from it, or upload a zip file that would be unzipped once on the server.

The future looks bright for this piece of software as long as development doesn’t stop. 🙂

CardPlayer Magazine

They’ve lowered their subscription rate to $39.95 for a year (26 issues). The previous rate of over $100 was ridiculous! Before I could finish reading the email message I was on their site paying for my subscription. Get yours today.

Keystroke Shortcuts

I spend a lot of time on computers. That means a lot of time with my hands on the keyboard. Wouldn’t it be great it there was an easy way to make every computer work faster? There is…they’re called keyboard shortcuts and I use a ton of them. Most of them have become second nature I use them so often. Last week when I was taking the VB.Net course my partner kept asking me how I did this or that. This guy had worked for 17 years as a program and didn’t know the shortcuts that I use everyday! I believe that some of these shortcuts are essential skills for a programmer and I wouldn’t be able to live without them.

A few notes…These shortcuts should work in *most* Windows applications, but not all. Some people don’t know what the Windows key is (I’ll use WIN as an abbreviation), so I’ll explain it. It’s the key on a PC keyboard that is usually between the Ctrl and Alt keys on the left side and between the Alt and Context key on the right side. It has the Windows logo (flag) on it. I will not be stating the obvious shortcuts such as Page Up/Down, Delete, etc. but will include a few that I never see people use when they should.

Golf At Boyne Highlands

Just a quick update to say that I golfed on the Heather course at Boyne Highlands today. We only played 9 holes though because the rain really started to come down. I was on a scramble team with my Dad and our team took first out of the three teams. -3 for nine holes in […]

Top 10 May 2004 Searches

At the end of each month (I’ve decided this is the last month I am posting this), I post a list of the top 10 keyword combinations (searches) that visitors have used in a search engine to get to my site. It’s not a popularity list, because “poker chip tricks” and every possible way to search for that would dominate my top 10. These are the funniest, weirdest, or craziest searches that have resulted in a visit to my site. The searches listed are exactly as someone typed them into a search engine.

Here’s the list for May 2004…enjoy!

Angels & Demons

Angels & DemonsAnother great book by Dan Brown, author of The Da Vinci Code. I read the majority of the book on the flights to and from Sacramento, and finished up the rest last night. It was another page turner with a lot of suspense.

Just like the previous book I read by Brown there was a lot of code breaking which I really liked. This book was about the Catholic church and the Illuminati, who were attempting to get revenge on the church and destroy it’s following. Robert Langdon, a Harvard professor was the main character again. The character developments done by Brown are awesome. Throughout the story he throws in flashbacks for many of the characters explaining one of their fears or how they came to be where they are in their lives.

There was an insane amount of history in this book again. Brown must research for months and read hundreds of books before he dives into writing his own books, because his facts are top-notch. If you’ve read any of his other books, you should also read this one. I give it a rare A+.

If Things Look Funny…

Over the next week I’ll be making a lot more tweaks to the design of the site. If you notice anything that looks funny or out of place, leave a comment so I can check it out. Currently I’m using Firefox and IE 6 for testing, so if you are using another browser let me know how the site looks.

Update: Header images for the GanGreen the BluePrint styles are up!
