I’m Going to Play Zelda

Super Mario Run
has brought back some early video game memories. A game I never played and always wished I had is The Legend of Zelda.

Last week I set up RetroPie, which gives me a bunch of gaming system emulators. Zelda was the first game ROM I looked for. Almost 20 years later, I’m finally going to play.

Fun fact: This was the first home console title to include an internal battery for saving data.

Reload Your Mac Camera

Last month I bought some simple stickers to cover up the cameras on my laptops. My friend Ingrid bought some fancy covers at about the same time. Ever since, we’ve both been having issues with MacOS recognizing the camera when uncovered. Rebooting the Mac resolved the issue so I figured something was jacked up internally with sensors. Found a solution, but wanted to make it easier than typing in the terminal commands.

I’m an Alfred user, so I made a workflow (available on Github). Save the file and open it, which should import into Alfred. Change the keyword (default is camera) in Alfred if you want.

If you don’t use Alfred, I also made a command script you can launch instead of manually typing in the commands. It’s also on Github. Use File->Save Page in your browser. Open up a terminal window and cd to wherever you saved the reload-camera.command file. Change the execute permissions on the file by running chmod 744 reload-camera.command. Then you should be able to double-click on the file to run the script.

By the way, yes, you probably should cover up your camera, especially if you never use it.

Holiday Watch List

I always take at least a week off work over the holidays to recharge. Some of the things I watched during my break:

The Joy of Computing

The thing those computers didn’t do was tell me that I couldn’t do something because a marketing department or executive or shareholder wanted to prevent me from doing it, so they could sell me something else that would do that thing. Once we bought the computer, we owned it, and as much as I enjoy my tablets and smartphones and iMacs and whatever, getting back to my Linux command line and learning Python and talking to other enthusiasts online about what they’re doing with their little Raspberry Pis is reawakening this passion and joy that has been dormant inside of me for a long, long time.

I’m having a similar reawakening as I mess around with Pis and microcontrollers.

A 2017 Request

Please stop playing with your phone when you are driving. It only takes a second to drift out of your lane or not notice something in front of you. Don’t become a statistic. Don’t end someone else’s life.

The Facebook notifications, random texts, and Snaps can wait a few minutes until you reach your destination. If something is so important it requires immediate attention, pull off the road, park, and respond. Or use a hands-free call to respond instead of typing on the phone.

If you are good at keeping your phone tucked away, convince at least one other person to do the same.

Kingdom

Here’s my Kingdom in Super Mario Run, with each area organized by color of course. The game has been rough on the user experience, especially with the requirement to always be connected to the Internet. Seems to be improving though. It’s a fun game with challenges and unlocks that keep you replaying. I wonder if the people complaining […]
