I think you just need to choose sidebar as default layout in theme options. No, it’s not intuitive.

Nope, I had that. I looked at single.php to be sure there was no way to get a sidebar.

Yeah, no option for that in Twenty Eleven. As Nick did, the footer widget is what carries through. I’m not disliking that, myself, because it truly gives focus on the content, which I assume must have been the intent.

The more I thought about it I really liked it too. It’s such a change from what I expected and how my themes have always worked though.

I decided to use the footer widgets and switch to the one column layout. Kind of a bummer and surprising that single post views don’t allow a sidebar.
