BOD POD Body Composition Analysis

BOD PODIn The 4 Hour Body, Tim Ferriss recommends getting a BOD POD scan to determine an accurate body fat %. I’ve been using a Withings scale for my measurements for almost 9 weeks now, but was curious how accurate the body fat was. After a lot of thinking I decided to get a BOD POD scan done.

This morning I headed over to Human Performance Specialists in Tempe, AZ. I paid $60 to have the scan done. For accurate results I couldn’t eat anything this morning and couldn’t apply any lotions, hair gels, deodorant, or other products to my body.

So I stripped down and changed into a pair of Under Armour spandex shorts and put on a spandex cap thingy. They weighed me and then I climbed into tho device. The door was closed and it made some weird noises as the vacuum sucked out the air or whatever sciency stuff it does. Then the guy opened the door, let the air circulate and repeated the process. I got out, changed my clothes, and received a printout with my info. A quick and easy process.

  • Fat: 16.6%
  • Fat Free Mass: 83.4%
  • Fat Mass: 29.9 lb
  • Fat Free Mass: 149.941 lb
  • Body Mass: 179.841 lb
  • Body Volume: 76.898 L
  • Body Density: 1.061 kg/L
  • Thoracic Gas Volume: 4.343 L
  • Estimated Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR): 1810 kcal/day

My body fat percentage puts me at a moderately lean rating which is “generally acceptable for good health.” The report also showed some estimated total energy expenditures for different daily activity levels.

  • Sedentary: 2317 kcal/day
  • Low Active: 2733 kcal/day
  • Active: 3149 kcal/day
  • Very Active: 3765 kcal/day

According to the info sheet I would say I fall somewhere in the active to very active range.

So what did I learn? Before heading in this morning I jumped on my scale which read 180.0 lb and 16.3% body fat. The BOD POD had a slightly higher body fat, but I’ll take that level of accuracy. I’ve been thinking about trying to get my body fat low enough to see abs for the first time in my life, so this reaffirms that the goal is within reach if I want to go for it. I don’t have any plans to get another scan done, but I’m glad I spent the cash to have it done once.

I'm Healthy: My Fitness and Diet Journey

Back in February, I made a decision to change my life. My weight was up to 199.5 pounds and I wasn’t happy. I had never tipped the scales at over 200 and didn’t plan on seeing if I could do it. I started exercising on a regular basis and eating completely different.

In a little over 3 months I lost 20 pounds. I continued to my routines and eventually my weight dropped as low as 173 pounds. Around the end of July and through August I was golfing more than ever, so my exercise routine fell off, but my weight stayed around 175 the whole time.

Down 20

I didn’t hit 180 by the end of March as I had hoped, but a month and a half later I’m finally reaching that point. I’ve weighed in at 179.5 two of the last three mornings which puts me down 20 pounds in about 3 and a half months. Since my last update I’ve lost 7 more pounds and with the weather warming up I’m able to get outside and really enjoy the weather with golf, biking, rollerblading, and some tennis.

I’ve been sticking to healthier eating habits and working out almost every day in some way or another. Now that I’ve finally passed 180 I’m going to shift my focus to building up some muscle which should help burn the fat still left around my abs and upper chest. I actually wouldn’t mind getting down to 175 first, but my body needs a little change of pace.

Weight Loss Status

I didn’t reach my goal of 180 by the end of March but I did make progress for 2 straight months. I’ve been at 187 for almost 2 weeks, but finally hit 186.5 this morning. The fat has definitely been dropping off and I’ve been feeling better, both physically and mentally. I’m enjoying eating a healthy diet for the first time in my life and it really does make a difference.

With the weather changing I’ll be a lot more active and should see some more results over the next month. I know there’s more weight to lose because I can see it. The more time I put into building up some muscles the easier it’ll be to get rid of the extra fat.

I’m not quite sure what it is about this year, but I know more people working out and eating healthy than I can ever remember before.

Doing Great

Things are going great in Nick-land lately. The wisdom teeth extraction couldn’t have turned out any better. I haven’t really had any pain and my recovery was quick and easy. I’m still pretty limited in what I can eat, so that sucks. Oatmeal, smoothies, ice cream, and soup have been on the menu for almost a week now. I’ve had a few other things but it’s mainly been foods that don’t need to be chewed; right down the hatch. You don’t realize how important and satisfying a little chewing is to eating. When you’re simply swallowing your food you don’t have a chance to taste it. Maybe by the weekend I’ll be able to try something normal. Or at least I hope so. I could go for a burger and some fries!

The Abs Diet Get Fit Stay Fit Plan : The Exercise Program to Flatten Your Belly, Reshape Your Body, and Give You Abs for Life! There are only two weeks left for me to get to 180 and reach my goal. I’m breaking 190 on a consistent basis in the past week, but I still have a long road to lose that other 10 pounds. I implemented some new strength workouts into my routine last week and I’m confident I can push myself to the limits for the rest of the month. I actually purchased The Abs Diet last week and the book taught me a lot about how the body handles foods and deals with exercise. I’d recommend the book for anyone interested in losing weight the right way.

I’ve been on a workout program for 6 weeks now and I haven’t felt this good in a long time. I’m eating better, losing weight, and I have more energy. The first week or two is a little tough, but once you get yourself into a routine it becomes a life change you won’t regret. I’m past that hump and love all the changes I’ve made. For the first time in my life I look forward to working out and I’m enjoying fruits, vegetables, and other healthy foods.

There’s also something very exciting in the works that I can’t talk about until it’s finalized. I just thought I’d plant a little seed in the mind of the three of you out there still reading my blog. Maybe in a few weeks or a month I can let the secret out.

Feeling Better

I’m feeling better today for the first time in nearly a week. It turns out I just have the common cold/flu. I also managed to get an eye infection somehow. I’m blessed with a low white blood cell count, so when I catch something it hits me a bit harder than everyone else. Last night I finally got some sleep which can be the #1 cure sometimes. It was only 4-5 hours, but that’s probably more than I’ve had since Wednesday combined.

I just weighed myself and I’m down to 175 pounds from 185. That’s my ideal weight, but I’d much rather have reached it through exercise and eating right, not lack of appetite and feeling like shit.
