Offline

I’ll be offline until late Tuesday night. That’s an extremely long time for me. I’m not sure I’ll be able to go 12 hours without checking the status of my Google ads or Gmail. Hopefully I’ll be hitting them long and straight and making a few putts along the way.

Refreshed

I was out of town for a long weekend and I’ve been very busy since I came back, so that’s why I haven’t posted in a week or so. Last weekend was the 2005 Nautical Festival (“Naughty Fest”) in my hometown of Rogers City, MI. It’s always a blast and this year was no exception. I had more fun over those couple of days than I’ve had in a long time. It felt good to get trashed with all of my friends from back home.

I had taken Thursday, Friday, Monday, and Tuesday off and I sure did need the break from work. After a short dentist appointment on Monday, I drove back down to Saginaw to catch up on some things. Mentally and physically I felt better than I have in months. Over the course of Monday and Tuesday I accomplished a lot of things around the house that I had been putting off for months.

I’ve even started looking for a new job. Seriously this time! Wednesday I spent over 2 hours browsing through emails that contained job search results and last night was more of the same. Once I finished catching up on a few weeks worth of email from Monster and Career Builder I hopped onto a few other sites such as Dice, HotJobs, and Computer Jobs in search of that perfect position. There are actually quite a few positions out there where I’d fit in well. The bad thing is I want to move out to CA and I’ll need an employer to take a chance on me relocating. I’ll just keep plugging away at it until something comes my way.

Wish me luck!

Gotta Get Away

I’ll be leaving work early today to head up north for the weekend. I’m really looking forward to getting away for a few days. I haven’t had a day off work in over two months and I need it.

I really hope to get my creativity back. I had planned to launch a new design for this site on the blogiversary. I’ve wanted to get some updates and a new trick posted at the poker chip tricks site. I haven’t had any real thoughtful posts on my poker blog either. I’m hoping this will all change after the holiday weekend.

Not only do I have Thursday and Friday off, but I also took Monday off because I have to go to the dentist. Five day weekends are always nice.

I'm Off…

In about an hour I’ll be taking off for Flint, flying to Chicago, and then arriving in Philadelphia sometime after 6 (their time). Lindsay and I always have fun, so it should be a blast. I have no clue what we are doing though, I left all of the planning up to Lindsay (teachers have all that damn free time in the summer). The training class should be really good too. I know bits and pieces of SQL, but I expect to learn a lot. We fly back into Flint late Friday night and then on Saturday night I’m going up to Harbor Springs for 3 full days of golfing 36 holes a day. 12 days away from the office couldn’t come at a better time! I’ll try to post pictures and updates throughout the week.

Enjoying My Break

I’ve been enjoying my holiday break a great deal. At the same time, I miss being back in Saginaw at my apartment, but this is a nice little get-away. I’ve been sleeping in until at least 10 every morning and I didn’t even leave the house yesterday.

The big project yesterday was to get a page up with poker chip tricks tutorial, and so far the page is getting a lot of attention. According to my web hosting stats, almost 500 visitors stopped by my site yesterday, which is amazing since I’ve never had 200 visitors in a single day before. My brother Isaac helped me out by doing most of the camera work on the videos. We used my digital camera and it worked out pretty well. Once the videos were done I wanted to compress them a little bit and I removed the audio to save some space. I used a DivX 5.1.1 codec for the compression, which seems to be giving a couple of people problems viewing the videos. Later tonight I hope to work on getting another video format posted as a 2nd option.

Update: Those having problems are now able to view the videos after installing the DivX 5.1.1 codec, so I will not be adding a 2nd video option for now.

Today I went and contributed to the Ryan family college fund. Doc. Ryan is my dentist, who I’ve been visiting frequently since I got my own dental insurance. I think I’ve bought half the equipment in their office by now. They filled two big cavities on upper left teeth. The numbing is starting to wear off and I can feel some pain coming on. It’s funny how my teeth never hurt until after I go to the dentist, even though my chart shows red marks on just about every tooth. As a kid my teeth were always hurting, but over the past 5 years or so I really haven’t had any pain. Maybe I’m simply used to it.

In a few minutes we are off to Cheboygan for Isaac’s varsity basketball game. I’m not even quite sure who they play, but hopefully the Hurons will come out on top. It’s a mini tournament they are playing in, so I’ll be going back tomorrow for either the championship or the consolation game.

When I get home tonight I’ll be working on the poker chip trick videos like I mentioned earlier. Maybe Isaac will even want another ass-whoopin in March Madness. I’ve only lost one time so far in the game…any challengers?

12 Days of Christmas

I was done working at noon today (the President of SVSU gave us a half day off) and now have 12 days of free vacation time. It’s one of the perks of working for a University.

I plan to spend my vacation:

  • Relaxing
  • Playing poker with family and friends
  • Going to the bar a few times
  • Relaxing some more
  • Working on my website
  • Sleeping in everyday
  • Watching college football and basketball
  • And relaxing

The drive home today wasn’t bad at all. It rained about halfway and the roads were clear the whole way. There was barely any traffic too, which was suprising. I’ll post some pictures from the drive to the photoblog later when I hook up my computer.

Another Loss

We had our 2nd game for Basketball league tonight. We lost 54-51. I think I had 15 or maybe 17 points. We were down by 10 with under 3 minutes and made a nice little come back. I hit 2 three pointers in the last minute to pull within one and then fouled (they made both free throws), but we didn’t get a good shot off at the end of the game. We only had 6 guys, so I sat out less than a minute for the entire 40 minute game. I’m whooped!!

One of the refs made the absolute worst call I’ve ever seen. We were on offense and Bob (one of our big guys) was down low with the ball and it got knocked loose. As he was going for the ball he got pushed and when he was falling out of bounds he threw the ball off the knees of a guy on their team. The ref that was under the hoop called a foul on them (which was the right call), but the other ref called a Technical Foul on Bob!! Everyone was like…”What the fuck?!?!” The ref says to us…”I saw how you threw it at him.” Now, am I missing something there? Refs can call fouls for the way a person tries to save the ball? What’s next? If a guy has an ugly shot, can he get a Technical? If my shoe isn’t tied, I get a T? I mean, come on. It doens’t even make any sense, does it?

Oh well, it’s just a game and it isn’t going to impact my life.

I had a nice enjoyable day of vacation today. Woke up around 11, screwed around with my computer and the website for awhile and started some laundry. I created a backup of the installation on my computer since I just reinstalled everything the other day. Now if something goes wrong it will be a whole lot faster to get back up and running. I finally made my way into the shower and then went Christmas shopping. I’m just about done with everything for the year, except for one or two more things. I hope everyone likes their gifts because I went all out this year. After shopping I watched the extended DVD of The Two Towers. The added scenes really added a lot to the movie, but holy shit is it a long movie now (roughtly 3 hours and 40 minutes). Worth watching though!

I’m going to the BasketBowl tomorrow at Ford Field. Michigan State and Kentucky are playing the largest basketball game (college, pro, etc.) in history (in terms of attendance). There are supposed to be over 75,000 people there. I’m taking my Dad and brother Isaac to the game as a Christmas gift and mom will be shopping while we are gone. I’ll have a lot of pictures to post when I get back.

Vacations Are Nice, But…

A vacation from work and normal life is always a nice thing. It helps to clear the mind and gives you time re-focus on things. It’s fun to get away from all of the normal, everyday responsibilities that we have. Vacations are a time to relax, have fun, un-wind, and “free your mind” (couldn’t help myself with the Matrix quote).

I enjoyed a long 5 day weekend up in northern Michigan with family and friends. Went out to the bars a couple of nights and played poker every single day that I was home. I’m not the only one becoming obsessed with the game! I think I’m going to take this week off from playing…I’ve had enough for awhile. The Lions pulled out a win on Thanksgiving, which made the food even more enjoyable. I got to sleep in until at least 11a.m. each day that I was home, so that was awesome, but I’m dreading waking up early again in the morning for work.

Is it just me, or is it that a vacation is never long enough? I never want to get back to work after a period away from the office. I like getting back to my regular life, but the work part is never fun to go back to. Maybe it’s because I know that I’ll just have to put up with the same old bullshit. Hopefully in the future I’ll work somewhere that I don’t feel that way. :-/

Well…I suppose I should try to get some sleep. My body isn’t going to agree with early to bed and early to rise after 5 days of long nights and sleeping in.
