Party On Pistons

The other day while watching the Detroit Pistons on TV I noticed an ad for Party Poker on the front of the press row which runs down the sideline of the court. Who’d have thought that gambling would be advertised at a sporting event!

Review: ESPN's TILT

Last night was the final episode of ESPN’s original series TILT. I had watched every episode of the series and I have to be honest; I thoroughly enjoyed every episode of TILT.

A lot of people have bashed the series, but I think they were expecting something different. I wasn’t expecting any poker lessons or any deep looks into the poker world. I was looking for an entertaining TV series that involved the game of poker and that’s exactly what the worldwide leader in sports delivered.

I tuned in each week wondering what would happened next. I became more interested in the overall plot and side stories than I was in the poker aspect of the show. I think this is what ESPN was going for and simply used poker as their lure to reel us all in. After all, I would have never watched the series if it involved blackjack players instead of poker players.

Some of the arguments against TILT I’ve read are justified. I’ll be one of the first to agree the producers did make mistakes, but what show on TV doesn’t? Too often we look for the negative things about a show, movie, or book and fail to appreciate the work for what it is. I highly doubt the producers ever planned to make this series a realistic look at the high stakes poker world or else they would have included a lot more of the high profile players and they wouldn’t have made some of the mistakes they did.

TILT was meant to be an entertaining tale of poker, gambling, love, friendship, murder, and corruption. That’s exactly what it turned out to be. I commend ESPN on a job well done in that department.

Now, I must say that I was disappointed in how the series ended. In my opinion, there are too many unanswered questions, but maybe we’ll see TILT 2 in the future. What happened to the court case against Everest? Did Eddie and Dee hook back up? What about Miami and Clark…where did they go?

Overall I’d have to give TILT a B+.

Review: Tilt Episode 1

I’ve read other reviews of ESPN’s new poker show TILT and I have to disagree with them. I won’t even link them here because I’ve seen so many. I think they are all being a little to critical of the show. I mean, it’s a drama series on ESPN for Christ’s sake! Were you expecting a documentary filled with facts and figures and parts of poker that we don’t hear about?

I’ll start off with the preview show that aired on Wednesday night. When I read that Norman Chad was hosting I thought, “Great! Like I don’t get enough of him in the WSOP episodes.” Even though the preview was only a half hour long, I think they did an excellent job of setting up the show. Or maybe it was the fact that I only heard Chad’s voice for a couple of minutes. They gave a background of the story and talked with each of the main characters in the series. It was well done for the time allowed. Once the preview was overI remember thinking that I’d probably enjoy the series.

I was right. At least so far. Episode one starts off the action and sets up the rest of the series. We found out that Eddie, Miami, and Clark are teaming up to take down Don Everest, “The Matador.” The character of Lee Nickel will also be playing a large role in the show. He’s a sheriff on a mission to find out what happened to his brother and expose the Matador as a cheat.

ESPN created their own casino to film the show and as you watch it does look like a real casino. Other scenes such as a boxing club and the basement of a night club make you feel as if you’ve been introduced to the underground of poker. The poker hands that have been shown are more realistic than most movies, but there does seem to be a lot of bluffing so far. Reminds me of some of the hands I see online actually.

When I sat down to watch TILT, I was looking for entertainment, not a poker lesson. ESPN delivered. I’ll be tuning in each week to see what happens next and I suggest you do the same.

Tilt

…in the high stakes game of TILT, the most costly bet will be on the future…

TILT

I saw a Google Ad on one of my sites today for ESPN’s new poker show and thought I’d check it out. It looks entertaining, so I’ll be tuning in to watch. I need a regular show to watch each week besides ER anyways. There is a preview special with Norman Chad (Couldn’t they have picked someone better!) airing Wednesday, January 12th at 7:30pm ET on ESPN2 and the first episode is Thursday, January 13th at 9:00pm ET on ESPN. From the looks of it, there will be 9 episodes in all, so it’ll be a short series. One of the characters, Eddie, reminds me of Ben Affleck a little. I wonder if he was chosen for that reason…probably not.

Attitude on the Felt

I’ve been thinking recently about a player’s attitude at the poker table. Obviously some styles work better for some than others and each person displays their own attitude. I say “display” because a lot of people might be putting on this attitude simply for the poker table; just another bluff if you will. But does any one particular attitude work better than others?

Tilt

On January 13th, ESPN will launch their latest drama, Tilt.

“Tilt” will take place in Las Vegas in the days leading up to a major poker tournament. The viewer will get an inside look at this sometimes glamorous and sometimes dangerous world through the eyes of the players. In addition to the competition in cards, the central characters will battle for control, money and fame.
