First Post of 2007

Wow, three months without a single post on the blog. That kind of sucks. I’ve had plenty of material to write about. Looking back through my calendar, here are a few highlights…

  • January 5 — Bought a house.
  • January 7-12 — Attended MacWorld in San Francisco, CA.
  • Rest of January — Cleaning, removing wallpaper, painting, and moving.
  • January 23 — Started a new job at SVSU as Microlab Technology Specialist.
  • February 11-17 — Trip to Phoenix, AZ for Altiris training and lots of golf.
  • March 14 — Saw the movie 300 in IMAX, which was AMAZING!
  • Marach 17 — Bought a road bike.
  • March 25 — Walked 18 holes here in Saginaw, MI. Had never before played MI golf in March.

January was a crazy month for me and February was pretty busy as well getting set in the new job. I love the house I bought and went with a pretty big one as a first time home owner. Go big or go home right? The new job is excellent. I don’t have to deal with the phones and stress of working at a Help Desk anymore. I’m kind of on my own which is a new challenge and very rewarding.

I’ve been working out like a mad man for the most part and really enjoying it. I feel so much better, both mentally and physically, when I workout daily. I want to “attempt” a couple of triathlons this summer, which I think will be an amazing experience and quite the accomplishment.

I still have that new design stashed away for MDV. Once I get my taxes done and a few other things done around the house I’ll try to pull it back out and get it finished because this site really needs a face lift.

Out of Office

Just looking at the calendar I counted out of the next 21 weekdays I’ll only be at work for 7.5 of them. I love this time of year! Our holiday break starts at noon on December 22nd and we’re back to work on January 3rd. On the 8th of January I fly out to San Francisco for MacWorld and will return on the 14th after a nice 7 hour layover in Las Vegas. To help recover, I took the 16th as a vacation day. Thirteen and a half weekdays out of the office and all of them are paid, with only one being charged as vacation. Sometimes I don’t realize how good it is working for a University.

San Francisco Treat

I’ll be attending Macworld the 2nd week of January with Dave. I’ve been helping out with Mac support at work and this will be my training for the year. I’ve wanted to check out San Fran for quite some time, so I’m excited to go. Hopefully I don’t come home as a switcher, because I hate to say it, but I love Windows.

I can’t wait to see what SF has to offer. I’m a big fan of seafood, so I want to eat around Fisherman’s Wharf a couple of times. It should be a good time all around.

On the flight home we have a 7 hour stay in Las Vegas which should give us 4-5 hours to play some poker on the strip. It’ll be my first time in Sin City, so I’m pretty excited.

Back To Normal

After a week out in Philly and a 3 day golf trip, life will be back to normal for me. I had a great time on both trips and was sad to see them end. Tomorrow it’s back to work and the daily grind.

I won a few side bets on the golf trip (two long drive bets with Dad were the highlight) and placed in a couple of the events, but didn’t shoot as well as I would have liked. I’ve found out that I can hit the ball a lot further than I had thought, even with my slice. If I can eliminate the slice I’ll have driving distance like the pros. The trip consisted of a lot of laughs, good company, and a little bit of golf. As we say during the Hackers/Whackers McDuff Open, “We are not here for a long time, just a good time!”

After 108 holes of golf in 3 days, I’m whooped. Being out in the sun for 10 hours a day really does a number on you. My face looked like a tomato yesterday, but seems to have cooled off a bit today.

Surviving Philly

It feels good to be alive. Today Lindsay and I took the bus down to Penn’s Landing on the Delaware River, where we ate at a great restaurant called Rock Lobster. Since Lindsay left her ID at the hotel, we couldn’t go to any of the bars and Dave & Buster’s wouldn’t even let us in. With nothing else to do, we hopped on another bus and headed to the motel. Not knowing what the hell we were doing, we missed our stop and ended up in the slums of Philadelphia.

Overall, we were on the bus for over an hour and there were less than 5 other white faces that got on. Good thing the driver was nice enough to bring us back down the route (back through the slums). Our shitty motel never looked so good when we got back. At least we can laugh about it now though.

Day 2 In Philly

Today, in the first day of class, we covered a lot of material that I had already learned from classes I took during college, so it wa a little boring. After class, I waited for Lindsay to return from her trolley tour and then we headed off for some excitement. I promise this post isn’t nearly as long as Lindsay’s was yesterday…

I'm Off…

In about an hour I’ll be taking off for Flint, flying to Chicago, and then arriving in Philadelphia sometime after 6 (their time). Lindsay and I always have fun, so it should be a blast. I have no clue what we are doing though, I left all of the planning up to Lindsay (teachers have all that damn free time in the summer). The training class should be really good too. I know bits and pieces of SQL, but I expect to learn a lot. We fly back into Flint late Friday night and then on Saturday night I’m going up to Harbor Springs for 3 full days of golfing 36 holes a day. 12 days away from the office couldn’t come at a better time! I’ll try to post pictures and updates throughout the week.
