Right On Time

Heading off to Whistler, Canada for the 2017 Automattic Grand Meetup. I usually pack right before I fly and always fly out of MBS. I can leave my house an hour before the flight and still have plenty of time.

8:25 am

Fresh out of the shower. Time to get dressed and pack.

8:39 am

All packed, though I did end up adding one more hoody. One week in a carry-on.

8:43 am

Remember when I said I like to leave an hour before my flight? Departure time is 9:43 am.

Right.

On.

Time.

Sofia, Bulgaria in Pictures

I had a wonderful trip to Sofia, Bulgaria last week. I went there to work with my team, HR @ Automattic, which we call The Human League. What made the trip really great was having a local on our team. Petya planned everything for us!

Beer

I drank a Heineken and the Sweet Water on the flight from Detroit to Amsterdam.

I tried to stick to Bulgarian beers once I got there.

Food

Other than spending time with my teammates, my favorite part of the trip by far was the food. I was impressed. Took advantage of trying some things I’ve never seen on a menu.

Bacon mac & cheese and grilled chicken avocado sandwich at DTW.
Bacon something sandwich
Bone Marrow – YUM!

Stuff to See

Going to Bulgaria

Heading to Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, for a team meetup. It’ll beat out Budapest, Hungary as the farthest east I’ve traveled.

There is a 7 hour time difference from the Eastern time zone, so it’ll be interesting to see how jet lag affects me. Since it’s a +1 day trip, I won’t be going to bed (maybe a nap or two on the flight across the pond) until Wednesday night local time. Usually staying up through the travel night and all of the next day helps to reset my internal clock.

Duffle Bag Travel

My trip to Austin is only 3 nights so I thought I’d try using a duffel bag instead of my usual “carry-on.” I like that I didn’t have to plane-side check it at MBS and it’s easier to jam into a small overhead bin. I don’t like having to carry it. Anyone have a favorite […]

Unplugged

I just landed back in the United States after being on vacation in Costa Rica since Sunday night. I had a great time! The number one reason it was so good is because I completely disconnected from my life.

20140402-203241.jpgI didn’t bring a computer with me. I can’t remember the last time I went more than a couple days without using a computer; I practically live on the Internet.

I used my iPhone a bit on Monday because I was maybe going to meet up with Lori from my gym back home, who was out here with her husband and daughter. It didn’t work out though and I’ve been offline ever since. Since Monday afternoon, my phone was rarely out of airplane mode.

On Saturday night, even before leaving, I actually deleted the Facebook app so I wouldn’t be tempted to check on everyone back home. I spend way too much time on Facebook and may just leave it off my phone as an experiment. I can’t even explain how nice it was not reading all the status updates and liking pictures. No distractions from what I wanted to do for the day and none of that stupid logging in every 10 minutes to feed my curiosity if anyone had posted something new. Seriously, see if you can go FB-less for just a day.

No texting and I didn’t buy an international data plan for this trip. I really wanted to get away and I’d say mission accomplished. I was having withdrawals before I even got out of the States on Sunday, but I didn’t even have a second thought once I arrived in Costa Rica.

I have no idea what has been going on anywhere for the last 4+ days and I love it. I think I’m going to unplug more often to enjoy real life.
