Dedicated Server Hosting

Does anyone know of a good company to get a dedicated server to host my sites? I have some new projects in the works and shared hosting just won’t cut it anymore. 1&1 has some good pricing on dedicated servers, but I have a free account through them and I hate their Control Panel and the fact that I need they use different usernames for everything. One for FTP, another for MySQL, others for email, etc. I love my current host, Aplus.net, but they won’t do any type of price matching for me, so it looks like I’ll have to make a switch.

I’m not looking for anything super special. I want a good processor, decent HD space, a lot of bandwitdh…pretty much all the basics.

Suggestions?

Site Tweaks

I’ve made a few modifications to the site.

The photos section is now powered by Pictorialis II as promised. The basics are there, but I need to modify the layout some more to make it look how I want. I really like the software though. Awesome stuff Mark!

I’ve also modified the way Link It posts show up on the main page of the blog. They were taking up too much space. Since the goal of them is to create a very short post, I’ve modeled them after Matt and I like the look. I do need a way to make them stand out a little more though.

Google Search

Google Adsense came out with a new feature called WebSearch today. You can now search the web or my entire site from the sidebar. Try it out for yourself…it’s pretty sweet. I’ve wanted a search feature for my site (instead of just the weblog search available through WP) for quite some time and this is perfect.

I even have the option to customize the search results page, but haven’t done that yet. Right now I’m just happy to have such an awesome feature on my site. I love Google!

What do you think…is there too much Google on my site?

Photos Are Back

The Photos section of the site is back. It needs a lot of work, but at least it’s there again. I decided to only upload the “important” pictures from the old setup, but I’ll upload new ones as the days go by. It’s a nice and simple interface, which I really like. I’m using SPAM/iPAP to mange the photo albums and it works well. The software needs a lot of improvements, but those will come with time.

Some of the things I would like to see are:

  • Resizing of images on upload.
  • Saving images into folders based on the album, instead of one folder for all of the images.
  • Rotating of images based on EXIF data.
  • Use MySQL or some derivative instead of a flat database file.
  • Better ability for templating. The CSS should be moved out into a seperate file and PHP code should be allowed in the templates.
  • Deleting albums and images doesn’t work quite right yet.
  • Batch uploading. Currently I have to individually choose the images (maximum of eight). I would like to see an option where I could choose a folder and upload everything from it, or upload a zip file that would be unzipped once on the server.

The future looks bright for this piece of software as long as development doesn’t stop. πŸ™‚
