Review: Gillette Fusion Power

On the recommendation of my friend Casey I bought the Gillette Fusion Power about a month ago. This razor is a work of art.

Shaving has always been one of my least favorite things to do, but the Fusion Power is literally “changing the face of shaving.” Your first reaction might be that five blades is a bit of overkill, but it feels great on your skin. I had previously been using an electric Norelco with the lotion dispensing system and thought it worked quite well. I doubt I’ll ever go back to an electric after using the Fusion.

The Gillette Fusion Power feels like it’s gliding across your face as you use it. It doesn’t have that pull and cut feel that my old Mach 3 did. I’ve been using the razor for over a month now and I’ve only nicked my skin a couple of times, which is even less than I used to with an electric razor.

I just wish the blades weren’t so expensive!

Review: The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift

I enjoyed the original The Fast and the Furious, but thought 2 Fast 2 Furious was a bit far-fetched, especially the end scene with the boat landing on the yacht. So going into the third movie, Tokyo Drift, I wasn’t sure what to expect, which is exactly the reason I waited until the movie hit the cheap seats and I could see it for $2.25.

I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised with The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. Walking into the theater I figured I was getting some cheap entertainment for 2 hours, but instead I saw a decent movie. As I sat back in my seat I felt the same enjoyment I did going to the very first movie in the F&F series. Tricked out cars and hot girls are two great ingredients to use for a good movie because they get your attention right away.

I really enjoyed all of the drifting which is a completely different type of racing than we saw in either of the previous two films. I wish I could drive like some of the stunt men who did the scenes for this movie. The end of the movie was a bit of a surprise and a nice touch to leave the door open for a fourth film.

Review: Superman Returns

I saw Superman Returns on opening night and am finally getting around to a review. The movie was up to my expectations going in. There was a good story and a lot of action. The length of the movie was a bit long and I thought a few parts could have been cut out to make it shorter without losing any of the plot.

The big secret that gets revealed towards the end didn’t come as much of a secret if you ask me. As soon as the character involved in the secret was revealed I knew what would end up happening.

The ending of the movie left it wide open for more to come in the future which seems to be the Hollywood thing to do lately. I enjoyed the movie and would watch any others to follow.

Review: Brush Tee

Brush TeeI had always wanted to try out the Brush Tee, so when The Savvy Golfer sent me a package of them for testing, I was all for it. The whole idea makes a lot of sense…less resistance against your ball and club at contact and the ball will fly longer.

Last week while golfing a round of 9 by myself I pulled out the Brush Tee and decided to give it a try. The first thing I noticed was that it’s not all that easy to tee this thing up. With a normal tee most players will use the ball to help them push the tee into the ground. Since the top of the Brush Tee is, well, basically brush bristles, you can’t use the ball to get this thing into the ground. You either have to try and grab the tee around the middle, where the brush part ends or you have to put a finger down the middle of the bristles and push it down. Teeing the ball up for a drive shouldn’t be this difficult.

The next thing I noticed was that a golf ball doesn’t sit particularly well on the Brush Tee. It’s not possible for a golf ball to sit crooked, since it’s all rounded, but I constantly felt like my ball was leaning one way or another. When you’re trying to go for it with a driver the last thoughts you need to be having are that your ball is going to fall off the tee when you swing.

Brush Tee simply isn’t for me. I’ll stick to normal tees.

Review: TurfTee

TurfTeeTurfTee is a revolutionized way of hitting golf balls versus the old fashioned rubber tees.” The idea behind the tee is great in theory and something I’ve always wished for. Hitting off the standard rubber tees at a driving range has never been one of my favorite ways to practice and never will. With TurfTee I thought those days might be over.

Savvy Golfer, sent me a TurfTee to give a little test drive about a month ago and I was finally able to give the product a try. At first it took me a minute or two trying to figure out who the tee actually worked. It didn’t seem to want to go into the longer whispier matt surface, where the rubber tees are, so then I tried the other part of the driving matt and it stuck in right away. I tucked the green end of TurfTee under the matt and teed a ball up. After two swings with my driver, the shorter yellow tee had broken. The little plastic tie down at the bottom of the tee where the string is held in place snapped. My TurfTee testing was over rather quickly because the taller blue tee puts the golf ball much higher than I like it for driving.

If the company behind TurfTee could come up with a better design for the leashes and holder, I think they’d have a great product. The current system doesn’t work though. I’d be pretty mad if I had purchased the item and had it break after two swings of the club.

Thanks to Savvy Golfer for the opportunity to try out TurfTee.

Review: United 93

United 93This year will be the 5th anniversary of the tragedies which occurred on September 11, 2001. No one living in the United States can say they’ve forgotten what happened on 9/11, but it’s far enough in the past where a movie could be released about the event. United 93 is the story of the only hijacked plane not to reach its target that day.

The film was created in actual time from the time the flight left the ground to the time it was met it’s fateful fall. United 93 honors the brave men and women aboard United Airlines flight 93 and serves as a memory of everyone else who lost their lives on September 11th.

I don’t want to go into details about the movie, but it was brilliantly produced. The way in which scenes were filmed really gave you an idea of how chaotic and out of the ordinary the day’s events were for those attempting to figure out what was happening in the air. When the movie ended there were a few words displayed about the film and the events of that day. Once the credits started to roll nobody in the theater knew what to do. Not a word was spoken. As we walked out the door my friend Tom remarked, “This is the first time I’ve left a movie and felt like I was leaving a funeral.” United 93 is a powerful movie, which brings back memories of the events which have changed our lives forever. Don’t wait for the DVD…go see it in a theater when you get a chance.

Football Replay Systems

Each weekend, millions of people tune in to watch college and NFL football. The game of football is played at a fast pace with referees making crucial decisions about penalties, ball spots, turnovers, and scores. There isn’t a human being in the world who can make these split-second decisions without making a mistake now and then. In come the replay systems.

The NFL first debuted a replay system in 1986, but in 1992 is was voted out. In 1999, a new system was started and is still being used today. Last year, the Big Ten football conference experimented with a replay system for the college game. It was so successful that 8 more conferences, as well as Notre Dame, are some type of replay system for 2005. All of the 28 bowl games at the end of the season will also use a replay system.

As a Detroit Lions and University of Michigan Wolverines fan, I’ve seen my share of both replay systems in use. The Big Ten gets most aspects right where the NFL’s system has some major flaws. There is also one area where both system fail.

Review: Crash

Crash (Widescreen Edition)Movies like Crash are what keep me watching different movies all the time. This is not your typical movie where good guys win over bad guys and we have a happy ending.

Crash is a modern day tale of morality. The entire movie is based on racism in the lives of people from different backgrounds and how they come into contact with one another. The cast has some top stars that step down from their typical roles for the purpose of getting a message across to the audience. Sandra Bullock is the biggest star in the movie and she only ends up saying a few lines.

It really is a tough movie to explain because you need to watch it in order to understand. And by watch it, I mean the entire thing. About 1/3 of the way through the movie I was thinking, “I know we have racism in the world and I don’t need this movie to tell me about it. What’s the point here?” I caught myself looking at the DVD player several times to see how far along the film was. Soon after it started to get interesting though. The story requires a lot of background information on each of the characters and the producers did a great job of setting it all up.

Crash starts off with Don Cheadle’s character explaining the term “crash” and this really helps to set up the rest of the movie. As you get through the second half you come to realize what he meant by his explanation. This movie is an eye opener on some levels, but it was also a very entertaining watch. I give it an A-.

Review: Catch Me If You Can

Catch Me If You Can (Widescreen Edition)I’ll be the first to admit I’m not a fan of Leonardo DiCaprio, but way back when I first saw previews and clips for Catch Me If You Can, I was interested to see the movie.

I thought the movie was a good fit for Leonardo and I actually enjoyed his acting. The role was a good one for him. He seemed to work well with Tom Hanks, who played a good part too. Come to think of it, the only other movie I can name from DiCaprio was Titanic. So maybe my dislike for him was made up or based on seeing him in the news.

Catch Me If You Can is a good movie that keeps you wondering how he’ll get caught. Will Hanks pull off some excellent detective work? Will DiCaprio screw up? The movie is based on a true story which makes it all that more interesting. How did such a young kid con so many people?

The movie is a nice change of pace from the normal action or comedy type films. Give it a watch sometime. I’ll grade it with a B.
