Review: Napoleon Dynamite

Napoleon DynamiteI really liked Napoleon Dynamite. Yes, it is stupid, but so stupid that it becomes funny.

Right away the movie was different. The opening credits were unlike any I’ve ever seen before. Most movies do the opening credits with computers and graphics, but MTV came up with something new for this one. Each name/credit was on some type of food with a different carpet used as a background each time. For instance, a hand came into the picture with an open hamburger on a plate. On the hamburger, written in mustard was the credit. It was a pretty neat idea.

You’ve probably heard many people talk about how dumb Napoleon Dynamite is. I won’t argue there. The plot and characters are so out of place that it makes you laugh. I’ll admit that I was laughing my ass off in several parts. Two of my favorites had to be when Napoleon took the bike jump and when he fell off the fence. Just great scenes.

Many people won’t like this movie, but it was a nice change from the “normal” movies. How do I grade it though? It really is a horrible movie as far as content, but I think that’s what made it so enjoyable. You really have to appreciate the movie for what it is. I’ll give it a B just because I can’t give it a high grade or a low one.

The Incredibles: Movie Review

The Incredibles (Widescreen 2-Disc Collector's Edition)I’m not a big fan of animated movies, but I enjoyed watching The Incredibles. Overall, it was a well written story which kept my interest throughout the movie. It’s amazing how real Pixar makes animation look. We’ve come a long way since Saturday cartoons in the 80’s.

What really got me into this movie was the superheros. Although I’ve never read comic books, I’m a fan of the comics that have come to the big screen. Watching a superhero movie that was animated is a bit different, but it was still enjoyable. One of the things I really like about animated films is hearing the voices of actors that I’ve seen in “real” movies.

I give it a B.

Review: Star Wars – Clone Wars, Vol.1

Star Wars - Clone Wars, Vol. 1 (Animated)With Star Wars Episode III less than two months away, not many people are aware of this DVD, but it’s a very important piece of the story. So what is it? George Lucas wanted to bridge the gap between Episodes II and III, so he decided to team up with the Cartoon Network to produce an animated series.

Volume one of the Clone Wars is composed of 20 three minute long pieces which have been shown on the Cartoon Network TV channel. For the DVD, each part of the series was seamlessly combined into one long piece. Clone Wars has a lot of action with little diaglog, as most animated films are.

The whole idea behind the series is to explain what happened during the Clone Wars because we don’t get to see it during the real Star Wars episodes. There is battle after battle shown throughout the DVD and you even get the first underwater battle in the history of Star Wars. You get to see some of the events that push Anakin towards the dark side and Obi-Wan’s attempts to control the young Jedi Knight.

Every true Star Wars fan needs to see this DVD before going to the theater for Episode III Revenge of the Sith. Since this if Volume 1, there is no doubt there will be at least one more, but I sure hope the DVD is released before May 19th.

I give this movie an A-.

The Jacket

The JacketI hadn’t heard of this movie until last night when my friend Casey and I were trying to find a movie to go see. We watched the trailer online and thought it looked good. We were right.

The Jacket is one of those movies that gets you thinking and will definitely require a second viewing once the DVD comes out. The story is about Jack Starks (Adrien Brody), a man accused of killing a cop. He doesn’t remember anything and is sent to a mental institution where some of his treatments involve a jacket. I won’t go into any more detail on that. A girl named Jackie (Keira Knightley) helps Starks find the answers that he needs.

Adrien Brody played an excellent part and has to be one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood. Keira Knightley doesn’t even need to say anything to look good in a film, but did a good job as well. If you’d like to see here nude, this is a film for you. πŸ™‚

Overall it was a great flick with a suspenseful and mind working plot. I’m already looking forward to the DVD release to answer some of my questions. I give The Jacket a B+.

Review: AVP – Alien Vs. Predator

AVP - Alien Vs. Predator (Widescreen Edition)I’ve watched Predator and the Alien movies, so when I had heard about AVP I knew I’d watch it, but wasn’t all that excited.

When I watched AVP earlier this week I was very satisfied with the film. Whoever came up with the story did a wonderful job of bringing the two different creatures together for an exciting plot that is believable at the same time. The acting was decent, the special effects were pretty good, and the movie kept my interest.

After the opening scene of the movie, you don’t see an Alien or a Predator for quite some time, which was a bit confusing, but it quickly made sense as the story progressed. The one part about the movie that I didn’t like was their dead giveaway; I knew who would end up saving the day right from the start.

Overall, AVP is a very good movie and delivers where it’s supposed to. I give it a B+.

Review: WordPress 1.5

First of all I’d like to say congratulations to Matt and the rest of the WordPress development team on a fine job with WP 1.5. Earlier tonight I happened to be checking my email when a few changes came in to the CVS mailing list. The latest change had the log message of “*cough*” and I was curious. I scanned down the email message and saw “$wp_version = ‘1.5’;”. That made it official, although I don’t think they’ve made a formal announcement yet. I jumped on over to AIM and sent Matt a congratulations message. He quickly asked if I wanted to test out the first build. HELL YES!

What you see is what you get…and so much more. Currently the site is using the new default theme, which is Kubrick. Much better than the old theme. If you actually liked the old theme, it is included as a “classic” theme choice.

Ok, lets get on with it…

Coach Carter

Coach CarterLast night I went to see this movie with a few friends. Coach Carter is one of the best sports movies I’ve ever seen. It’s based on a true story, so the plot is great and the movie was put together really well.

Samuel L. Jackson is always great and this movie is no exception. He plays the part of Coach Carter, a strict man looking to change the system. By the end of the film, he has changed the lives of his players, made boys into men, and become their friend. A feel good story all the way.

The movie was done well all-around. I’d never seen a lot of the actors, but they did well. Ashanti even plays a part in the film and comes through with a good performance. The basketball scenes from made me think I was actually watching a game. There were parts when I was squirming in my seat, because it was if I wanted to cheer when someone made a shot.

Overall it’s a great movie with a great story. Go see it. I give it a A.

The Village

The Village (Widescreen Edition) - Vista SeriesEver since I saw previews for the Village I wanted to see it and couldn’t wait for the DVD to be released. Even though I’ve heard mixed reviews about the movie I still wanted to watch it. I’m glad I did.

M. Night Shyamalan comes through with an amazing thriller that keeps you guessing. If you ask me, I think it’s a much better film than Signs, but not at the level of The Sixth Sense. The Village is an entirely different type of story than has been seen before and it works extremely well. Some may say it’s a little far fetched, but I’d have to disagree. In fact, I thought it was a brilliant plot.

For fear of giving away any details about the movie, I’ll stop here and let you see it for yourself. I give it a B+.

Mech Assault 2: Lone Wolf

Mech Assault 2 Limited EditionThe original Mech Assault was the first game I played on Xbox Live and it was a great game. For the past few months I had been looking forward to the release of Mech Assault 2: Lone Wolf for a fresh Xbox Live experience. After playing a few games online, I’m very disappointed.

The single player campaign in Mech Assault 2 is challenging and fun, just like the first game. They’ve upped the intensity and added some new features that make it one of the top games released in 2004. The controls have changed, but are still extremely easy to use. There are new mechs, new maps, and new enemies to blow up. The maps/worlds are really well done with some great detail and design. With the addition of new mechs come the addition of a few new types of weapons that add more variety to the game.

Resident Evil: Apocalypse

Resident Evil - Apocalypse (Special Edition)Ever since the ending of the first Resident Evil, I had been waiting for this movie to come out. After failing to see it in the theaters, I bought the DVD. Resident Evil: Apocalypse is a good movie, but definitely not as good as the first was.

Apocalypse takes place in Raccoon City, where Alice (Milla Jovovich) escapes from the medical facility to defeat the T-virus, which has been let out of the Hive. She meets up with Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory), a hot rougue cop that reminds me of the Lara Croft character, and they work together in an attempt to get out of the city before it is destroyed.

The special effects aren’t anything to get excited about and the story isn’t all that great either. I hope they improve on it for the next film. I give the movie a B.
