They’ve lowered their subscription rate to $39.95 for a year (26 issues). The previous rate of over $100 was ridiculous! Before I could finish reading the email message I was on their site paying for my subscription. Get yours today.

2004 WSOP

The first day of the No-Limit Hold’em World Championship has just started play at Binion’s Horseshoe Casino. For a buyin of $10,000 you could have been sitting there with AA on the first hand. The tournament should last until Thursday or Friday when the champion will receive well over $2 million! Will there be another story like Chris Moneymaker. Will Phil Hellmuth, Phil Ivey, Annie Duke, Doyle Brunson, or another pro go home with the coveted gold bracelet? It will be the largest field ever to play in the WSOP, which should make things very interesting.

Sit & Go Success

After the worst losing streak of my UB career, I’ve switched from playing .25/.50 limit hold’em to playing $5+.50 no limit hold’em sit & go tournaments. I played OK in 3 or 4 over the past few days, but didn’t get much help from the cards. Today though was a different story…I took a 1st and a 3rd in the last two I played. It’s a lot more exciting playing in these one table tournaments, so I think I’ll keep at it. It can only help my game for home tournaments…right?

Update: Just took a 2nd!

Update #2: …and another 2nd.

Update #3: Tried a $10+1 SnG (much tougher competition) and finished 4th, one place out of the money.

Update #4: Took 2nd in a $10+1…I’m done for a few days!!

A Night Of Poker

Played poker tonight with the guys over in Bay City. We played Hold’em, Omaha, Crazy Pineapple, and a few other random games. I ended up losing $10 or $15, but I had fun and that is what counts. Right? πŸ˜‰ I went out by winning the last game we played, so that made it all the better. I just couldn’t get into any type of rhythm with the cards, so that part of it kinda sucked.

Jeff and I were supposed to party, but when we heard no one was at the party by 11:30, we decided to keep playing cards. We made the right choice because now we won’t wake up with hangovers. πŸ™‚

I Like To Compete

I don’t care what it is…I like to compete. Whether I’m playing basketball, golfing, playing poker, working, or playing video games, I like to make a competition out of everything. I don’t like to lose to anyone at anything, but I am always up for the challenge.

My Dad ingrained the competitive nature in me as a child while playing sports and it has lived on ever since. I thank him for this because competing is a lot of fun and has given me many memories over the past 24 years.

Since I hate to lose, if I do end up losing, I make it a personal goal to get better at whatever it is that I lost at. I want to be the best and won’t accept anything less. It’s not easy to be the best at everything you do, but I sure do try. It takes a lot of hard work to learn something new or improve your skills at something you are mediocre at. I’ll do research on the Internet, read books, practice…pretty much whatever it takes.

One thing that I’ve recently noticed is that I talk to myself when I’m competing at something. As an example, I’ll be playing basketball, take a shot, and it ends up short. I’ll catch myself whispering, “Use your legs!” Or…I’ll be playing poker online, will play a hand that I shouldn’t have, and of course lose the pot. I’ll again whisper something like, “Play those hands and you deserve to lose.” So even when I’m competing I’m working at getting better!

Challenge me…

The Trip

Sorry for the lack of postings this past week, but I didn’t have Internet access readily available. With that said, here is how the week went…

On Sunday, we (mom went with) took off for Detroit around 10 a.m. We had a connecting flight in Chicago and ended up landing in San Diego at about 6 p.m. It was nice gaining the extra 3 hours. The temperature was 78 degrees, but it was almost dark already. We picked up our rental car (Pontiac Grand Am), checked into the Wyndham (a very nice hotel) and grabbed something to eat at Chili’s, which was right in front of the hotel. After eating we decided to hit up a casino.

The Viejas Casino (pronounced “Vee-A-Haas”) was one that I had found online with a poker room. I scoped out the poker room and put my name on a waiting list for a table. It wasn’t too long and I was playing the $2/$4 beginner Hold’em table. Since it was the beginner table to teach people how to play, check-raising was not allowed. Talk about a loose table! People were playing every hand imaginable. I didn’t really get shit for cards the whole night or I could have made out like a bandit. Played for about 3 and a half hours and lost $22. Not too bad considering how bad my cards were.
