Review: AVP – Alien Vs. Predator

AVP - Alien Vs. Predator (Widescreen Edition)I’ve watched Predator and the Alien movies, so when I had heard about AVP I knew I’d watch it, but wasn’t all that excited.

When I watched AVP earlier this week I was very satisfied with the film. Whoever came up with the story did a wonderful job of bringing the two different creatures together for an exciting plot that is believable at the same time. The acting was decent, the special effects were pretty good, and the movie kept my interest.

After the opening scene of the movie, you don’t see an Alien or a Predator for quite some time, which was a bit confusing, but it quickly made sense as the story progressed. The one part about the movie that I didn’t like was their dead giveaway; I knew who would end up saving the day right from the start.

Overall, AVP is a very good movie and delivers where it’s supposed to. I give it a B+.

Coach Carter

Coach CarterLast night I went to see this movie with a few friends. Coach Carter is one of the best sports movies I’ve ever seen. It’s based on a true story, so the plot is great and the movie was put together really well.

Samuel L. Jackson is always great and this movie is no exception. He plays the part of Coach Carter, a strict man looking to change the system. By the end of the film, he has changed the lives of his players, made boys into men, and become their friend. A feel good story all the way.

The movie was done well all-around. I’d never seen a lot of the actors, but they did well. Ashanti even plays a part in the film and comes through with a good performance. The basketball scenes from made me think I was actually watching a game. There were parts when I was squirming in my seat, because it was if I wanted to cheer when someone made a shot.

Overall it’s a great movie with a great story. Go see it. I give it a A.

The Village

The Village (Widescreen Edition) - Vista SeriesEver since I saw previews for the Village I wanted to see it and couldn’t wait for the DVD to be released. Even though I’ve heard mixed reviews about the movie I still wanted to watch it. I’m glad I did.

M. Night Shyamalan comes through with an amazing thriller that keeps you guessing. If you ask me, I think it’s a much better film than Signs, but not at the level of The Sixth Sense. The Village is an entirely different type of story than has been seen before and it works extremely well. Some may say it’s a little far fetched, but I’d have to disagree. In fact, I thought it was a brilliant plot.

For fear of giving away any details about the movie, I’ll stop here and let you see it for yourself. I give it a B+.

Resident Evil: Apocalypse

Resident Evil - Apocalypse (Special Edition)Ever since the ending of the first Resident Evil, I had been waiting for this movie to come out. After failing to see it in the theaters, I bought the DVD. Resident Evil: Apocalypse is a good movie, but definitely not as good as the first was.

Apocalypse takes place in Raccoon City, where Alice (Milla Jovovich) escapes from the medical facility to defeat the T-virus, which has been let out of the Hive. She meets up with Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory), a hot rougue cop that reminds me of the Lara Croft character, and they work together in an attempt to get out of the city before it is destroyed.

The special effects aren’t anything to get excited about and the story isn’t all that great either. I hope they improve on it for the next film. I give the movie a B.

The Movie With 4 Endings

The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King (Platinum Series Special Extended Edition)Last night I finally watched my special extended edition copy of The Lord of the Rings – The Return of the King. All 4 hours and 20 minutes of it!

There’s no doubt in my mind that this is one of the greatest DVDs ever released. I noticed a lot of the added scenes and that’s saying a lot since it’s been over a year since I saw the theatrical version. The new scenes really do add to the story, filling in a few gaps. You’re missing out on the full experience of the movie if you don’t take the time to watch this extended edition. I can’t wait to check out some of the special features on the other two discs.

I, Robot

I, Robot (Widescreen Edition)I had heard great things about I, Robot so my expectations were unusually high. So, yes, I was disappointed in the movie. Don’t get me wrong, it was a good movie, but not DVD buying material. The story was just a little bit too out there for my tastes.

Will Smith did a great job in his role as the cop with a hate for robots. I won’t be spoiling any suprises by saying that he turns out to be the hero. What? Did you think he would end up dead? Other than Smith, there isn’t a whole lot of action by many others in the film. Well, besides the robots that is.

For a movie set in the future, I would have thought there would be more/better special effects. There weren’t. There was some good stuff with the robots, but nothing that blew me out of my chair.

With all of the hype the movie received, I really was expecting a lot more. I give it a B+.

Ocean's Twelve

Ocean's Twelve (Widescreen Edition)Ocean’s Twelve is the highly anticipated sequel to the hit from 2001, Ocean’s Eleven. From what I had seen in the movie trailers over the last couple of weeks, I was expecting to be disappointed. I most definately was not though. With all of the original cast coming back, this movie is a great sequel.

Ocean’s Eleven was so good that most people were expecting Ocean’s Twelve to be a box office flop. After watching the movie last night, I just don’t see that happening. For one thing, the movie has too much star power to fail. You’ve got Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, Andy Garcia, Casey Affleck, and many others. They even added Catherine Zeta-Jones for this one. She sports a shorter hair style in the movie and looks hotter than ever. Truly a great addition to the cast.

I’m not going to give out any details on the plot except to mention that Terry Benedict (Garcia), finds Ocean’s crew and wants the money back that they stole from his casinos. From there, Danny Ocean (Clooney) and the guys are on a mission to find a high paying “job” to save their lives. Just like the first film, this one is full of 180s and 360s to keep you guessing up until the credits roll.

If you liked the first movie I would recommend catching this one soon. I give it an A-.

Bandits

BanditsI borrowed this movie from my brother, not knowing what to expect. Bandits was released in 2001 and I didn’t remember seeing the previews for it. After taking the time to watch it, I was very suprised at how good it was. Billy Bob Thornton, Bruce Willis, and Cate Blanchett all played excellent roles in the film, with Thornton probably doing the best.

The “Sleepover Bandits” (Thornton and Willis) escape from prison and start to rob banks in order to achieve their goal of living in paradise. In the process of robbing these banks, they both fall in love with a woman they “kidnapped.” She becomes confused about the relationships with each man and ends up leaving them both. The plot kept moving and changing throughout the entire movie and I didn’t ever feel bored watching it. I was actually interested to see what type of twists would come up next. It’s a beautifully crafted story for a movie.

I give it a B+.
