Rounders

Rounders (Collector's Edition)One of my favorite movies of all time. I figured I should watch the greatest poker movie in history before I hit up the casinos on my trip to San Diego next week.

Matt Damon, Edward Norton, and John Malkovich all play important parts in this film. It’s a story of a New York poker player who loses it all for a dream and works to get it back when he gets into trouble for an old friend. If you like to play poker or do a little gambling, you can’t go wrong with this movie. I could go on forever talking about Rounders, but I’m going to keep it short and let you watch it yourself. Pay attention, because there are a lot of great quotes in this movie.

I give it an A+.

Man's Weakness

While watching The Hulk today, I realized something. All of the superheroes that I can think of share a common weakness…a woman!

  • Bruce Banner (The Hulk) – Betty Ross
  • Peter Parker (Spider-Man) – Mary Jane Watson
  • Matt Murdock (Daredevil) – Elektra Natchios
  • Clark Kent (Superman) – Lois Lane

The more I thought about it, all men share that common weakness…we just need to find the right woman.

The Hulk

The HulkI finally got around to watching the DVD. It’s the first time I’ve seen this movie since the week it was released in the theaters. Just like any other great movie, it gets better each time you watch it.

Is this movie just another comic book character brought to the bigscreen? No way! The Hulk brought the comic book feeling to motion picture. You really have the see the movie to understand, but let me try to explain…Many times throughout the film, cut sequences are used to display different angles of a scene, just like you might see in a comic book. It was really a great idea and worked tremendously well.

The way they produced the transformation of Bruce Banner into the Hulk is also a sight to see. It has that special comic book feel to it. The computer annimation that was done to bring the Hulk to life was amazing. I can’t pick out a single scene where I noticed that something physical wasn’t actually in the shot, interacting with the environment. Stan Lee also makes a brief appearance in the film, which he has done in Spiderman, Daredevil, and others in this line.

I give it an A-.

Ocean's Eleven

Ocean's Eleven (Widescreen Edition)I watched this movie yesterday and forgot to write a review. I’ve seen the movie once or twice in the theater and countless other times on DVD, so that alone should tell you I think it’s a great movie.

What more could you ask for? Eleven guys (all with different talents) team up to rob a Las Vegas casino. It’s a great plan that runs into a few bumps in the road. Just when you think you have it all figured out, a final twist is thrown as you. “Wow!” is about all you can say when it happens. George Clooney, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, Bernie Mac, Elliott Gould, Casey Affleck, Andy Garcia, Julia Roberts and many others make it a great cast for a movie.

If you haven’t seen this movie…what are you waiting for? I give it an A.

The Core

The Core (Widescreen Edition)I don’t remember ever hearing about this movie when it came out last year, but it was pretty damn good one to watch. It didn’t remind me of all the other typical save the planet movies that come out every year.

It was a pretty neat story that kept on moving forward and kept my interest. I even learned some little tidbits of information about the make-up of our planet Earth from it, so that was a nice bonus. Hilary Swank was smoking HOT in this flick, even with the mid-length hair, and DJ Qualls (Kyle from Road Trip) did an excellent job as the uber computer geek. The geeky computer stuff in the movie may have been what set it apart (for me) from the majority of the save the world movies that I’ve seen.

If you are looking for a movie to watch one night and nothing is looking good, I’d recommend this one. I give it a B+.

Miracle

Miracle (Widescreen Edition)Great movie! I don’t know if I need to say any more than that. It’s just an awesome story and will forever be a part of history in the United States. The movie made me proud to be an American.

I can’t pick a single thing from this movie that I would have changed. Kurt Russell did an excellent job as coach Herb Brooks and all of the other actors did a great job as the hockey players. I can’t wait for the DVD to come out because I want to know how they did some of the camera angles during the games. There were some fantastic shots (from the camera). I believe they used the original commentary from the game, which was a nice touch. The thing I liked the most about Miracle is that I learned about the entire story of it. I’ve always known about the event, but by watching the movie I was able to learn about a lot of the action that happened behind the scenes and led up to the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team beatest the Russians and going on to win the golf medal.

If you haven’t seen this movie yet, go see it in the theater and then watch it again when it’s released on DVD and VHS. It’s definitely on my purchase list with an A+!

Fargo

Fargo (Special Edition)I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from this movie, but it was pretty good. “Okay”….”Yah” For some reason it’s always entertaining to listen to what we (here in Michigan) call the UP accent.

Fargo is based on a true story, but not in the usual sense of a true story brought to film. It wasn’t one of those feel good stories. Without giving too much away I can tell you that it’s about a man who hires a couple of guys to kidnap his wife so that he can make some money off of his father-in-law. The deal is supposed to go off without a hitch, but of course things don’t happen like that.

I really loved how Frances McDormand played a pregnant cop named Marge. She never stopped eating or talking about eating through the entire movie. Overall I have to give this movie a B, but say that is definitely worth watching.

From Dusk Till Dawn

From Dusk Till Dawn (Dimension Collector's Series)Different. I’ve never seen a movie make a complete 180 so quickly. The movie is rolling along fine, actually pretty good and then all of the sudden you’re like, “What the hell just happened?!”

It’s an older movie, from 1996, but was pretty good. The cast included Harvey Keitel, George Clooney, Quentin Tarantino, Juliette Lewis, Salma Hayek, and Cheech Marin. In fact, you could include Cheech 3 times because he played 3 different parts in the film. So Mike Myers and his Austin Powers movies are not the first to have one actor play multiple parts.

Sometimes I like movies that are a little out there, and this one definitely was. It’s not one of my favorites, but it wasn’t to bad to watch. However, I don’t ever plan on watching it again.

Since it’s an older movie I have bump the rating a little bit and give it a B.

Underworld

Underworld (2-Disc Unrated Extended Cut)I had mixed feelings when I saw previews for Underworld. Sometimes the vampire movies are good and sometimes they are horrible, but this one turned out to be OK.

Kate Beckinsale did a good job as the lead roll, playing the vampire caught up in the middle of a war between the vampire and werewolf races. She falls in love with a werewolf, which causes quite a controversy in the vampire coven.

Overall, I’d recommend this movie for a one-time viewing, but it wasn’t good enough for me to actually buy it, so I’m glad I borrowed.

I grade it with a B-.
