Google Search

Google Adsense came out with a new feature called WebSearch today. You can now search the web or my entire site from the sidebar. Try it out for yourself…it’s pretty sweet. I’ve wanted a search feature for my site (instead of just the weblog search available through WP) for quite some time and this is perfect.

I even have the option to customize the search results page, but haven’t done that yet. Right now I’m just happy to have such an awesome feature on my site. I love Google!

What do you think…is there too much Google on my site?

Gmail Giveaway

I’ve been given 3 more Gmail invites so I’ve decided to have a contest.

Take a picture that somehow involves an animal or animals. Creativity is a must! Hint: I hate cats, so don’t use them! You may enter as many photos as you want, but are only allowed to win one Gmail invite. I’ll pick what I think are the best 3 2 photos. Only original contributions will be accepted (no copying from somewhere on the Internet). Please do not send me scanned copies of photographs either. I prefer the photos to be taken with a digital camera, but if you really want to use film, have the photos converted to a digital format when you get them developed.

I will showcase all of the entries in the photos section of my site (which will be converted to Pictorialis II in the next few days).

Email your submissions to mtdewvirus [AT] gmail [DOT] com with a subject of Gmail Giveaway. Make sure to include your full name (I need it for the invite) and a website if you have one. If you have any questions, leave a comment.

The deadline to submit photos is Sunday June 20th at 12:00 PM Eastern.

Good Luck!!

Update (6/15/2004 6:10 PM): I’ve decided to give out one of the invites to the person that can break this code first. Follow the instructions above for sending me the answer.

Gmail Invites

After logging into my Gmail account today I noticed a link to Invite Friends. Turned out that I had been given 3 invitations. They went to Deacon Blue, Mo, and another co-worker, Doug. Unfortunately I don’t have any left (so don’t ask), but if I get more invitations I’ll likely have some type of contest to give them away.

I’ve also decided that it’s time I start using my own account. Bill was nice enough to give me an invite, so I better put it to good use. I’ll be forwarding all of my MtDewVirus email over and changing where my scripts send to.

If you want to send me something, my address is @gmail.com.

Hint: Just look at my domain name or site title for the part before @!

Top 10 May 2004 Searches

At the end of each month (I’ve decided this is the last month I am posting this), I post a list of the top 10 keyword combinations (searches) that visitors have used in a search engine to get to my site. It’s not a popularity list, because “poker chip tricks” and every possible way to search for that would dominate my top 10. These are the funniest, weirdest, or craziest searches that have resulted in a visit to my site. The searches listed are exactly as someone typed them into a search engine.

Here’s the list for May 2004…enjoy!

What I Look For In A Blog

How does a site make it into my Weblogs I Read link list?

Friends

This is the easiest way because I’m definitely going to read up on what my friends have to say. At the same time though, my friends can’t have a garbage site and expect me to visit often.

Design

You must have a good design. I don’t want to see 20 different colors of text. I don’t want red Xs for broken images. I don’t want to see yellow text on a white background. Your design doesn’t have to knock my socks off, but it must be easy on the eyes.

Regular Updates

You should update on a regular basis. I don’t want to come to your site and find that you haven’t posted in weeks. How boring is that?!? Everyone has something to say, especially those of us with blogs. Your audience is waiting, so just say it. I may from time to time frequent a site that doesn’t update regularly, but for this to happen, is has to be worth my time (see next item).

Content

The most important part of a blog is the content. I don’t visit a site just to look at all the pretty colors. I click on your link for something to read. What I read better keep my interest or your site doesn’t have a chance. What keeps my interest? Well…I generally like blogs that mix it up a bit. Sometimes I visit a site simply because it has a single focus, like technology or sports, but I prefer a little more. I like to read things that interest me combined with personal posts about the author’s life. I’d like to get to know the writer behind the words. A simple About Me won’t cut it, because those pages are not frequently updated. I want to read about your day at work/school once in awhile. I want to know where you went on vacation and what you did. If I don’t learn anything about you as an author, your site is just another page on the web. It feels more like a community when I can refer to a blog’s author by name.

I just cleaned up my list, so I’m looking for some new content to read. If you think you have what it takes or know a site that might, leave a comment and I’ll check it out.

Aplus.Net Web Hosting

Aplus.Net recently upgraded their web hosting plans and they did one hell of a job. The Solo XR plan had previously been rated #1 by CNET and now the plan is even better! I’ve been paying for the Pro plan because I needed PHP and MySQL, which are now both included in the Solo XR. I’ve already made a request to downgrade my plan since Pro is $19.95/month and Solo XR is $9.95.

Here are some of the main features of the Solo XR:

  • Disc storage: 1100 MB
  • Data transfer/mo.: 45 GB
  • 400 e-mail boxes
  • 2 FTP accounts
  • 99.95% uptime per year
  • MySQL database
  • PHP 4 with GD support
  • Statistics

I’ve been using Aplus.Net for over a year and a half now and have experienced great support and performance out of my site. If you are looking to start a web site or change to a new hosting company for your current site I recommend the plan outlined above. Now here’s my plug…if you do sign up, tell them that mtdewvirus.com referred you and I will get one month of free hosting. πŸ˜‰
