Review: Poker Ace Portable Tournament Director

Do your run poker tournaments at home? Do you also play in these tournaments? If you’ve answered ‘yes’ to both questions, you know how much work it can be to keep track of time, blinds, and everything else while still trying to concentrate on playing poker. The Poker Ace Portable Tournament Director (PTD) will make your life much easier and make your poker tournaments more enjoyable.

Poker Ace Portable Tournament Director

The first thing you’ll see when turning on the PTD are two options:

  • Start New Tournament
  • Set Preferences

I chose preferences right away and was presented with:

  • Backlight
  • Brightness
  • Contrast

Not a whole lot to configure as far as the preferences go. It took me a few button presses to figure out which buttons actually changed an option and which one moved to the next option. The button use here was actually very confusing and the opposite of what you’d expect it to be.

After selecting to start a new tournament you’re presented to choose from one of 10 structures. Eight of the structures are preset (but still editable) and two of them are for storing user configured tournament structures.

Once a tournament structure is selected, you’ll be prompted to choose:

  • # of players
  • Buy in
  • Addons
  • Rebuys
  • Rebuys/Addons end of level

The next screen to come up is the payout structure, which is editable just as the tournament structure details are. Finally after everything is set you’ll be prompted to start the tournament. As soon as you press a button, the timer will begin and PTD goes to work. The screen displays the level, time remaining for the level, current blinds, next blinds, ante, and how much time is left during the rebuy period. During the last 10 seconds a beep will come from the device every second as a warning.

What didn’t I like?

I didn’t think the device is very user friendly. I mentioned the button use during the Preferences screen earlier in the review, but there were several times when I didn’t know which button to press. For example, when ending a tournament, the screen displays “Are you sure you want to end tournament?” but it doesn’t give any options such as Yes or No. Also, when I first was choosing a tournament structure I couldn’t figure out how to edit anything, so I had to consult the manual and found the Edit option was all the way at the bottom of a long list on the screen. This should be at the top. Using a device such as this should be as intuitive as possible and the manual should be a last resort, not required reading. A little more time spent on User Interface design and the manual wouldn’t even be needed.

The buttons don’t always bring up the next screen or change an option right away.

The beep used during the last 10 seconds of a level is not nearly loud enough. I tested the PTD by myself in quiet room and I could barely hear the beeping. If you’re playing a tournament with any kind of noise at all, you’ll need to have the PTD strapped to your ear to hear it.

Overall

The Poker Ace PTD – Portable Tournament Director is a great little device to use for your poker tournaments. The biggest challenges using the device are during setup, which can be done well before a tournament. The PTD runs for $49.99 at the Poker Ace PTD web site. I think it’s very good value for the time and hassle it will save you during a tournament.

Super Bowl Weekend

I played a little poker over the weekend. I also played a little poker about as bad as I could.

Before the Super Bowl we ran a couple of mini $5 tournaments. In the first tournament I was the first one out of 4 people. It only took two hands. The second time around I was second to go out of 5 people. Never bluff a calling station.

Later after the game… By the way, that had to be one of the worst all-around Super Bowls I can remember. The national anthem sucked, the refs sucked for the millionth time in this year’s playoffs, the half-time show sucked, and the game was rather boring. So later that night I fired up Party Poker and saw the Bad Beat Jackpot was over $250,000. Might as well play for a couple of hours. I donked off somewhere between $100 and $200. The next morning I woke up and the BBJ still hadn’t hit so I said why not and played again. There went another $250 or so.

My poker game isn’t running well at all this year. It might be time to switch it up and learn Omaha 8/b for a change of pace.

Poker Podcasts

On my rides to and from work each day I’ve been listening to poker podcasts. Listening to poker discussions keep my mind off the traffic. In the mornings the poker talk gets my mind thinking and after work it helps to relax me after a long day.

My favorite poker podcast without a doubt is Card Club on Lord Admiral Radio. Cincinnati Sean, Brent Stacks, and everyone else who contribute to the show to an excellent job. Congrats on your 1 year anniversary guys!

Another poker podcast I started listening to is Rounders. It’s actually a poker radio show that they turn into a podcast. The radio station is Team 1040 AM out of Vancouver, Canada. My favorite part of the show has been the interviews with some of the top names from the poker world.

What do you know…my two favorite poker podcasts are both from Canada…eh! As a lifetime Michiganer I’m glad to finally find something good to come from our friends across the lake. 😉

Another popular poker podcast is Poker Diagram by Henry and Zog. It comes all the way from London. Each week they play some kind of online poker and discuss their play and other things poker. I listened to a couple of episodes and it was put together well.

I’m sure there are many other podcasts out there related to poker. Do you have some I didn’t mention? Leave a comment because I’d love to check them out.

Taking a Break

Lately I have been taking a break from all types of poker, online, casino, everything. The only poker in my life as of now is the WSOP on ESPN. Even though I already know what happens and who makes it how far, I still need to watch and enjoy the plays being made. I’m sure poker will be coming back into my life very soon, but for now, there isn’t much going on.

2 for 2

I hope everyone had a good Easter weekend. I enjoyed a few days in northern Michigan with my family. On two of those days I played in $5 tournaments with my brother and his friends. Each of the two tournaments had 7 players total. I had never finished in the money with these kids so I was itching to win some of my money back. Not only did I finally finish in the money, but I did it in both tournaments.

Another Bubble Finish

Yesterday I played a home tournament with my brother and his friends for a full table of ten players. I’ve played with about half of the guys before, but the other half were new faces.

I don’t remember a tournament where my cards have been as cold as in this one. As a result, I wasn’t involved in very many hands. I picked up KK in late position, re-raised the pot, and everyone folded. I had QJo in the blinds and flopped two pair. I had 4 callers on the flop and also on the turn. On the river I hit my full house and no one hit their straight of flush, so they all folded to my bet. I knew they were all drawing or had one lousy pair. Maybe I should have checked since I was first to act, but I don’t think anyone would have bet out with such a scary board.

Rogers City Poker Series

On Monday and Tuesday, the Rogers City Poker Series (or that’s what I’m calling it at least) was held at my house. My brother Isaac and his buddies came up with a plan for 4 tournaments. Each player, of which we had 9, bought in for a total of $50. The top three places in each tournament would pay out money. We were to play hold’em twice, ohama once, and stud once.

Bubble Boy

Ok…the recap from Friday afternoon’s home tournament is finally here. I know, I know, I’ve been slacking!

I helped my brother set up his poker table in the living room and brought in some chairs. The tournament was supposed to start at 2:00, but at 1:45 they were still calling people to play. We ended up with 15 guys, which turned out to be a good number after it was all said and done. My brother announced that we’d be paying the top three places, $100, $30, and $20. WHAT?!?! I couldn’t believe it. What ever happened to the standard 50% for first place? And why aren’t the top 4 getting paid with 15 people? Hey, whatever I guess, it’s not my tournament, even though I had to come up with chip distributions and help set everything up.

Poker Holiday

I’ve been able to play quite a bit online over the past couple of days, because there isn’t a whole lot else to do around here. I made over $400 yesterday in a couple of hours of play. In fact, I played for about a half hour yesterday morning and made nearly $200 playing two tables. I said before that I had not found the $2/4 bad beat jackpot tables on Party to be all that juicy. Well, I was wrong. They are very juicy, but so are the normal $2/4 tables. In fact, I think I’ve won more at the normal tables, but I have suffered quite a few bad beats on the jackpot tables. More than the odds say I should.

My brother is putting together a big tournament for around 2:00 today. Should be about 20 people he said. With a $10 buy-in, there’s not a whole lot at stake, but it should be interesting to see how all these young punks play. Hopefully I can stick to my game and place in the money. Look for a recap later.
