Beat Me Up!

Happy 4th of July! It’s raining here in good old northern Michigan so it looks like we’ll be stuck in the house all day. Dad is deep frying a turkey and we might have a little Texas Hold’em tournament on Isaac’s new poker table. He built it with one of his friends and it’s pretty sweet. I’ll post a picture on Monday night. Other than that I’m going to relax.

Last night I went to the casino with Mom and Dad. I played $5-$10 Texas Hold’em for almost 9 hours. I’ve been on a streak of bad cards and bad beats for a few weeks now (playing online) and it didn’t stop last night. I held JJ twice and both times AA came on the flop. I flopped a straight and someone backdoored a full house. I finally hit a flush and the board showed trips when the turn and river brought two more 8s to give someone a full house. Each of these pots were well over $100.

The cards just weren’t on my side. I did flop a set when I held AA. I was getting reraised by someone across the table, so it was a nice pot. The table was loose, but I just couldn’t get the cards. Dad won about as much as I lost, so I guess you could say we came out even though we don’t share bankrolls. Oh well, it was fun, which is what counts, because I wasn’t playing with money I couldn’t afford to lose.

Good Friday

Is it really that good? I’m still at work, which is extemely slow by the way. A lot of people have taken the at least a portion of the day off to go to church or do whatever. Since I’m taking so many other days off during the month, I’m stuck here. Maybe I’ll get to leave early and head up north before all of the traffic gets crazy. Yes, I’m headed up to my parents’ place for the first time since the middle of January. Hopefully it will be a relaxing weekend and I’m trying to talk Mom and Dad (well, Mom is easy to convince) to head up to St. Ignace to the casino on Saturday night. I think it would be fun. Today is Isaac’s birthday so I guess we are going out to eat at the Chinese place in town when I get there.

I haven’t even packed anything for the trip home yet…but I guess that’s nothing new for me. I’m hauling a bunch of Heather’s shit home too I guess to make it easier on the final moving days. On Monday I have an appointment to get my teeth cleaned up there, so I won’t have to battle with the Easter traffic, which is kind of nice.

Last night was a pretty good night. Heather and Steve went looking for futons with me and I found some really nice ones at the Mattress Connection on Tittabawasee, the same place I bought my bed two years ago. They really do have the best matresses around and their prices are pretty competitive. I didn’t order it yet, but will do that on Monday when I get back. We also grilled out on my new grill last night and it worked pretty well. I think I’ll be doing a lot more grilling now that I know it’s so easy. I also have plans to get a new cell phone on Monday so I’m pretty pumped about that. Verizon finally has the phone I’ve wanted and with the “New Every Two” I can get a new phone 2 months before my contract is up.

I hope everyone has a safe and Happy Easter!

The Best Wake Up Call Ever

I hate when people call at the ass-crack of dawn and wake me up on a weekend. But every once in awhile it’s for a good reason. Today is one of those days. My phone rang once as I lay in bed thinking, “I’m gonna kill whoever that is” or “They better be calling for something good.” They left a voicemail and then my phone rang again. At this point I’m really getting angry. I didn’t get to bed until close to 4a.m. last night so I’m running on less than 6 hours of sleep. I better get up and answer it though.

My friend Jeff asks, “What are you doing today?” All I can think is, “Sleeping and then kicking your ass for waking me up!” Then he asks me if I want to go to the Red Wings game against the Avalanche. HELL YES I DO! I couldn’t think of a better way for a single guy to spend Valentine’s Day than drinking some beer with his buddies and watching the best rivalry in the NHL.

I was supposed to attend my first Red Wings game earlier this year, but then my Grandpa died, so we had to sell our tickets. I guess things really do happen for a reason. Now I get to see the best game available. It’s a good thing I didn’t go up north this weekend like a few friends wanted me to!

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!

Christmas Tradition

Every year on Christmas Eve we have a tradition that we follow. Around 5:00 we start off with crab legs for supper. After everything is cleaned up, we open our stockings. For the past few years dad has been in charge of the stocking stuffers and we have a little joke with it. He goes to the dollar store and picks up cheap little things and usually a few lotto tickets. A few examples of things people have gotten in recent years are:

  • Small flashlight
  • Batteries
  • Packs of gum
  • Car air fresheners
  • Socks

We always have fun laughing about what everyone gets, even though some of the things are pretty useful.

We then go to church for 8:00 mass. After church, we take a drive around town and look at some lights and luminaries. What are luminaries? Let me explain…on Christmas Eve a lot of people light candles inside of old milk jugs (or other types of containers) and line them up on the street in front of their house. Every year they look the same, but for some reason we always have to drive by.

Once we get home from church, everyone changes into something comfortable and we usually make a few drinks. Then it’s time to exhange gifts, which takes us about an hour and a half. By the time we get done with presents, dad will be falling asleep and Isaac and I will either be ready to play a new video game or watch a movie.

On Christmas day we always get together with the Tatros (Mom’s family) to eat, play cards, and enjoy the holiday. This year everyone is coming over to our house, so we have to be the entertainers. I suppose we’ll play some Texas Hold’em, since everyone has fallen in love with the game.

The day after Christmas (26th) is of course MY BIRTHDAY, but we’ve never really done anything special for it. It’s really not a big deal to me. I guess this year on the 27th we are heading over to Alpena to get together with Dad’s family and are having a poker tournament over there. It’ll be interesting to see how they run it, since all of the tournaments I’ve been in so far were run by me.

I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable Christmas with their families!

Holiday Spirit

This year is like no other for me in terms of the holiday season. Usually I’m more concerned about me and what I’ll be getting for gifts instead of concentrating on everyone else. This year has been just the opposite. One thing you may have noticed is the title of this post. I didn’t call it Christmas Spirit because I’m more aware that some people don’t celebrate Christmas because of their religions, so instead they get to enjoy some time off work for the holidays.

I didn’t even really realize it until today, but my birthday is only a few days away! That should tell you something right there. I’ll be turning 24 so maybe this is all because I’m getting old…but I don’t think that is it. I bought presents for a lot of people this year, not just for my family. And the people I normally get presents for…they are going to enjoy what they get this year, I’m making sure of it. I can’t post what I bought yet since these people obviously haven’t received their gifts yet. Don’t want to give it away. 😉

Well, I guess I can name a few things. I got Mohamad a chrome Superman license plate cover. Hater and Casey each got 2 DVDs. For Hater I bought 2 SNL “Best Of” movies and for Casey I bought the movie Goonies and a Michael Jackson video compilation.

I haven’t been thinking at all about what I might be unwrapping on Christmas Eve. Instead, I can’t wait to see the looks on the faces of my family when they open what I got them! I’m pretty excited. 🙂

I’ll be heading up north to RC tomorrow so I have a ton of stuff to get done tonight. I’ve already been pretty productive since leaving work. So far I’ve:

  • Bought a few more presents.
  • Picked up packages from the leasing office.
  • Wrapped presents.
  • Paid my bills.
  • Did the dishes.
  • Uploaded new photos to the photoblog.
  • Packed up the laptop and poker chips.
  • Added acronym tags to my entire website.
  • Filled out a rebate form.
  • Thought about how much I have yet to do!

I still have a lot to get done tonight so I better move onto the next task, which will be making dinner, cuz I’m starving!
