Tiger Woods Wins American Express Championship

American Express Championship TrophyWith a first prize of $1.3 million on the line, the greatest players in the game of golf teed off this weekend in the American Express Championship of the World Golf Championships. The world’s #1 golfer, Tiger Woods, hoisted the trophy when John Daly missed his par put on the 2nd playoff hole.

Even though the end of the tournament was a letdown, golf fans everywhere got to watch two of the most exciting players in the game battle down the stretch. John Daly and Tiger Woods are two of the longest hitters on the PGA Tour, but both also have great short game skills. Tiger Woods is my favorite athlete in any sport and maybe the most recognized athlete on the planet. John Daly is a golfer most of us weekend hackers can relate to, so he is also very popular among spectators. Watching these two go head-to-head was as exciting golf as I’ve ever watched on TV. The team of Nick Faldo, Paul Azinger, and Mike Tirico do an excellent job with their commentary and analysis because they get just as excited as some of the fans.

Conforming Driver Heads

As the governing bodies of golf, The R&A and USGA make all of the rules. They decide when you can move your ball, when you receive a penalty stroke, and everything else imaginable. With the recent advances in golf technology, there has been a lot of discussion about which drivers are allowed. Both the R&A and the USGA have no released lists of which drivers conform to their standards.

So the next time your golfing buddy questions your mammoth drives, point him to the following pages.

USGA Conforming Drivers
R&A Conforming Drivers

Nike Sasquatch Driver

Nike Sasquatch DriverNike’s new Sasquatch driver is a great looking club. If you were going to buy a driver on looks alone, the Sasquatch might would be near the top of the list.

Nike has developed a new technology called Powerbow, which “adds a trailing volume of mass to apply more power and control to the ball without overstepping the 460cc limit.” This gives the driver the largest footprint in the game of golf. Powerbow is so revolutionary for making clubs they patented it. For the Sasquatch, they’ve moved the center of gravity lower and further back to give golfers more forgiveness and a larger sweetspot. When you look at the face of the club you’ll notice that Nike stayed with the nexTI that was used on the popular Ignite driver. Why change a good thing right?

For right-handed golfers, the driver is available in 8.5°, 9.5°, 10.5°, Lucky 13°, and Sweet 16°. Unfortunately lefties are limited to 9.5°, 10.5°, and Lucky 13°. Lucky 13° and Sweet 16° are the exact terms used on the Nike Golf web site. The Sasquatch is built with a Diamana shaft by Mitsubishi Rayon.

Nike also matching fairway metals which look equally appealing.

Update: I just saw the commercial on TV which was a neat idea. It looks like the clubs will be released in November.

Precept Lady SIII Golf Ball

Precept Lady SII Golf BallLast month Precept released a new softer lady ball which “offers avid women and slower swinging golfers ‘super soft, super high and super long’ performance.” According to Precept’s press release, the Lady SIII is the softest feeling golf ball on the market.

Some of the technology that went into the golf ball helps to generate maximum ball speed, minimize vibration, deliver optimum green side control and enhanced feel while putting. In addition, Precept has engineered a new dimple patter to help golfers get the ball in the air. For the women I’ve golfed with, this seems to be the #1 problem among them.

In addition to a traditional white golf ball, the Precept Lady SIII comes in four colors of pearl (yellow, blue, pink, and clear). I imagine the pearl variations of the ball were created for the female golfer who is looking to keep that cute look on the golf course.

Titleist Forged 735.CM Irons

Titleist Forged 735.CM IronsTitleist’s newest irons are targeted at skilled golfers. The irons are the first blended set created by Titleist. Blended sets have been getting more and more popular among golfers. As a blendeded iron set progresses from long iron to pitching wedge, the focus of each club shifts from forgiveness and distance to spin and control.

The 2, 3, and 4 irons in the set feature cavitybacks; the mid-irons have a shallow cavity; and the short irons employ a full muscleback. It’s the first-ever blended iron set from Titleist.

The cavity isn’t the only thing progressing in this blended set, however; Titleist also makes slight progressions in the blade heights, blade lengths, offset, topline, center of gravity and moment of inertia through the set, tweaking each club for maximum performance.

Titleist is normally recognized for making golf balls, but they make some great golf clubs as well.

adidas Golf Tour 360 Shoes

adidas Golf Tour 360 ShoesThe new Golf Tour 360 from adidas is an incredible looking golf shoe. The technology and design that adidas put into making this golf shoe is amazing. The Golf Tour 360 was made with comfort, stability, traction, and durability as the primary focus.

For comfort, a 3D FitFOAM insole is made using 3 different layers to keep you comfortable for those long days on the golf course. The foot is protected by an adiPrene cushioning system, which absorbs impact and reduces the harmful affects commonly caused by long periods of walking. A special liner in the shoes help to reduce foot movement and remove moisture.

The shoes are split into independent forefoot and heel areas by a midfoot wrap that works with the laces to create a stable environment. The bottom of the shoes was created to help increase your traction on all types of ground. adidas employees must play from the trees and other areas just like the rest of us. In addition to using specials spikes, the soles have Z-shaped grips.

Just like any other good golf shoe, the Golf Tour 360 is 100% waterproof to keep your feet dry on those soggy days. As an added bonus the shoes have a “bumper” on the toe. This helps the durability because they won’t wear out as easily as other shoes during the follow-through of a golf swing.

The most advanced golf equipment we’ve ever produced.

adidas Golf

As you can see the Golf Tour 360 not only looks good, but it was built to perform. I’ll be buying myself a pair for next year’s golf season.

Michelle Wie Goes Pro

Michelle WieOn Wednesday 15-year-old Michelle Wie from Honolulu, Hawaii made the move. At a press conference she made the announcement the golf world had been expecting; she was turning pro. As she spoke to the media, she was joined by representatives from Nike and Sony. Wie signed endorsement deals with the two companies which are worth roughly $10 million a year. It’s incredible to think a girl who has yet to turn 16 or get her driver’s license will make more from endorsements than Annika Sorenstam who is one of the greatest women golfers the game has ever seen.

Wie has the talent and the looks to do for the LPGA what Tiger Woods has done for the PGA. She finished in the top three in two of this years LPGA majors and has competed in several men’s tournaments. It’s only a matter of time before she is dominating the women’s game and competing at a higher level with the men. How long will it be before she wins a men’s event? I bet she’ll do it before her 20th birthday.

Over the next couple of years Wie will play a light tournament schedule so that she can finish high school. Once she graduates and is able to concentrate on golf full-time, the world of golf better watch out.

TaylorMade rac Black TP Wedge

TaylorMade rac Black TPTaylorMade’s latest wedge, the rac Black TP, replaces the rac Black. While the two wedges look the same they actually have some very important differences. The rac Black TP features TaylorMade’s tour-proven Y-cutter grooves, larger Feel Pockets and TaylorMade’s tour-configured sole, which features, among other things, a radiused leading edge. The Y-cutter grooves allow the club to grab the cover of the ball more effectively, which promote enhanced control and stopping power.

A prototype version of the wedge had been played on tour for the previous two years, where many pros using it fell in love with the club. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a more beautiful looking club. When looking down at the club during address how could any golfer not have confidence with one of these? The black finish even helps to reduce glare.

The distinctive dark finish, created by a three-step oxidation process, dramatically reduces glare.

The rac Black TP comes in 5 different lofts ranging from 52° to 60° in 2° increments. Each wedge is made with the TaylorMade TGT Wedge grip and the Dynamic Gold Wedge Flex shaft.

Wie Turning Pro

It’s been announced that Michelle Wie will turn pro before her 16th birthday. With as much talent as she has I think it’s a good choice. Too bad she isn’t a little closer to her 18th birthday or I’d say we could look forward to seeing her in a few swimsuit issues.
