A Shorter Back Swing

I’ve made great progress with the swing changes I mentioned last week. I stepped through a couple of videos frame by frame to see a comparison of the longest part of my back swing.

The club head is stopping a good 2-3 feet short of where is used to. It looks like I’m still crossing the target line a little, but I’ll take it because the shaft is stopping short of parallel for the first time in my life. With a shorter back swing, my head only moves a bit and so many other things are in a better position. My timing is off on the woods and driver, but has gotten better after a couple of sessions on the range. Iron shots feel great. I can’t wait to take the new swing to the course tomorrow for the first night of golf league.

Things to work on: Make a shorter back swing (stop at parallel) which will prevent the club from crossing the target line at the top. Eliminate forward hand movement before the back swing starts. Less rotation on the back swing. Start swing with hands and shoulders at the same time.

2nd Place in Golf League

Bill and I have been playing together in golf leagues for at least 5 years. We’ve had a lot of fun, but were never close to the top of the standings. We decided to switch to a new course and joined a league not knowing anyone. We moved from Twin Oaks, a wide open easy course with 27 holes, to Swan Valley, a more challenging course with a lot more trees and water.

The ages in the new league ranged from young to old. We actually had one guy turn 80! It has been a fun crowd. In the first half of the season we finished in 4th or 5th place. During the second half we were near the top every week. We played the first place team last week and came from behind to win second half. Tonight we played the first half winners and ended up a little short. Bill shot a lights out 42 and beat his guy pretty good. I had a rough start with a 9 on the 2nd hole, but clawed my way back for a 45. It was disappointing to come up short, but it’s the best we’ve ever finished in a golf league.

Thursday we’re having fun day. Each player is only allowed to carry two clubs which should be fun. I’ve always wanted to try limiting the sticks in the bag.
