Master Your Goals

Really wanting to be a better you and not caring about other idiots is the only way to continuously improve and never quit. It isn’t a lifelong process. It’s life itself! Be the best you can be by constantly beating yourself. –Oystein Jensen

Never Settle

Today I attended an UnPresenting workshop because I’d like to get comfortable in front of a crowd so I can be a speaker at WordCamps. When it was my turn to talk in front of the others I mentioned “I never want to settle.” It drew an interesting reaction.

As I’ve thought about it the rest of the day I was reminded of a post I wrote in 2004, titled Being Satisfied. Be sure to read the comment from my friend Lindsay, which is excellent. Many of the things I wrote about in that post are still goals today. A few things have changed.

If I were writing that post today, I wouldn’t mention money or a new job. When I worked for SVSU, money was a motivator because I didn’t enjoy what I was doing and there wasn’t any place to advance to. A higher salary was advancement.

Today I have a job I love. I’m motivated to make great products for our users, help my coworkers, and improve my skills. You might be thinking, “Isn’t that settling for your job?” Not at all. There isn’t another company in the world I would rather work for and I love the role I have. However, I will not settle for my performance. There are many things I have to learn and I can always get better at doing my job.

Do you settle?

Reviewing 2007 Golf Goals

As 2007 comes to a close, it’s the perfect time to review golf goals from 2007. They were:

  • Keep my 9 hole scores starting with a 3 or 4. I don’t want to reach the half-century mark again this year.
  • Break 80.
  • Get a hole in one. (When isn’t this a goal for a golfer?)
  • Break 40 more consistently.
  • Keep a slower controlled swing.
  • Talk Dad into making a trip to Ireland.

How did I do?

  • After March 31st, when I posted those goals, I shot 10 nine hole scores in the 50s.
  • I still have never broke 18. I’m sure I could have done it a few times after shooting a good 9 hole score, but didn’t play a second 9 a lot of those days.
  • Still no ace on the scorecard.
  • I broke 40 more than in 2006, but not more on a percentage basis.
  • I was in control of my swing more than I ever have been.
  • Dad is up for the Ireland golf trip. It will most likely be a few years down the road though

Not too bad, not too good. Chipping and putting was the key for me in 2007 and I sucked at it. It’s time to start working on goals for 2008.

If You Had All of the Money in the World

If you had all of the money in the world what would you do?

Before you answer, understand it’s not a question about money. The average person must work 40 hours a week to make ends meet. If you had all of the money in the world you wouldn’t have to work that much. You could do whatever you wanted. So what would you do?

Now, ask yourself, “Am I reaching out for my dreams or am I sitting back and waiting for something to happen on its own?” If not, it might be time to rethink your daily activities. Life is too short to go on wondering if you could have made it in life doing something else. Take a chance. You never know what buried treasures you might find along the way.

Update On Changes

Back on the 1st of the year, I set some goals for 2004. I just wanted to bring it back up and give some updates on how things are going…

  • Get a new job in the area of programming.

-I had the job at SVSU all lined up, but then got screwed. This is still in the plans for my near future.

  • Cut down on my sarcasm.

-I’ve realized that I am who I am and all of my sarcasm isn’t a bad thing, so everyone is just going to have to live with it!

  • Try to relate to others more…walk in their shoes.

-I think I’ve done a decent job on this at times, but it’s something I still need to work on.

  • Open up. Everyone knows that I’m shy. It’s just how I’ve always been, even thought I don’t like it. I want to try to get away from that.

-This ain’t easy, but I’m still trying!

  • Get into shape (physically) and stay fit.

-With the recent purchase of a bike, I’ve been riding 4 days a week and feeling great! It’s the best purchase I’ve made all year. Maybe not the coolest purchase (TV takes the cake!), but definitely a great investment.

  • Stop drinking pop. I had done it for a few months earlier in the year, so I know that it can be done.

-I had compeletely quit for a few months. Now I have one or two a week at the most. It’s amazing how much better I feel and how much money I save.

I think I’ve done a pretty good job with everything so far. I’m living by myself for the first time in my life and loving it. It’s been a great summer so far and I don’t expect anything less from the 2nd half.

Moving West

After two recent trips to California, I’ve decided that I want to move out west. I simply love it out there. The weather is great, the views are spectacular, and there are a ton of things to do. I’ve been to San Diego and Sacramento…loved them both. I’m not exactly sure where in the west I’d like to live, so it’s pretty wide open right now. If anyone has any suggestions I’d love to hear about them. I’m giving myself a goal of 2 years to be out there.
