Ocean's 13

Ocean's 13I really enjoyed Ocean’s Eleven when it came out and thought Ocean’s Twelve was good too. So when I saw Ocean’s 13 was next in line I knew I’d have to see it.

Went last night with Tom because it was too damn hot to do anything else around the house or outside. We both enjoyed the movie and I’ll add it to my DVD collection when it comes out. The movie has the usual cast of characters played by George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, Don Cheadle, Bernie Mac, and Al Pacino to name a few. I was surprised to see Julia Roberts missing from the 3rd film.

Ocean’s 13 shares the same kind of film-making as the first two movies and tries to keep you guessing what exactly is going on. This movie was quite a bit easier to figure out than the previous two and I actually saw quite a few things coming. If you enjoyed the first two, you’ll enjoy this one as well though. Very good for the 3rd movie in a series. I give it a solid B+.

Review: Bringing Down the House

Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six M.I.T. Students Who Took Vegas for MillionsAfter reading the back cover of this book I knew I had to read it. Bringing Down the House is the story of how M.I.T. students beat the house. They took Las Vegas and other casinos around the country for millions of dollars.

The book is one of the best I’ve ever read. It was one of those I couldn’t put down. I like to read chapter by chapter and each time I reached the end of a chapter I couldn’t resist going for just one more.

This story is the real deal. You read about the ins and outs of how these students worked in card counting teams to beat the blackjack tables one night at a time. These students forced casinos all over the world to change the way their security systems work. You’ll read about he highs and lows of winning big. If you’re a gambler this is a book for you. I give it an A+.

Amarillo Slim In A World Full Of Fat People

Amarillo Slim in a World Full of Fat People : The Memoirs of the Greatest Gambler Who Ever LivedWhat a great read! The book is broken down into twelve chapters, each having their own theme. Then each chapter is broken down into a series of what are really short stories about Amarillo Slim (Thomas Austin Preston Jr.) and his adventures.

You get to learn about Slim’s pool skills, how he started playing poker, and some of the craziest bets I’ve ever heard of. Like he mentions many times throughout the book, “if there’s anything worth arguing about, either bet on it or shut up.” More times than not, Slim made the bet. More times than not, Slim also won that bet. He’s beaten a horse in a foot race, rafted down “The River of No Return” in the middle of winter, and rode a camel through a casino; all to win money.

This just isn’t a book about poker. In fact, it’s more about gambling in general. Slim was never one to back away from proposition bets and he made a few of his own. His insights into the world of gambling let me in on my dream life, but also reinforced the fact that it’s “a hard way to make an easy living.”

I give this book an A-.

Kentucky Derby

My friend Casey and Hater headed down to Kentucky for Saturday’s 130th running of the Derby. How awesome would that be to attend? I gave Casey a ten spot to put on Lion Heart to Show. What that means is that the horse needs to finish in the top 3 and I’ll win money (the higher the finish, the more payoff). Hopefully it’ll cash out nicely. Right now the horse has 10-1 odds, so it’s not a long shot or a favorite, but in the top half of the pack.

Update:Lion Heart placed second! ๐Ÿ˜€
