I Couldn't Spell My Own Name

Nearly two weeks ago I had a very scary experience. The day was Wednesday, April 18th, 2007.

4:45pm

I got home from work and changed my clothes. Did a couple of things around the house and changed into some comfortable clothes.

5:15pm

Figured I would shoot some pool before working out. I couldn’t hit anything straight and realized my vision was a little bit blurry and it was hard to focus on the balls.

5:40pm

Whipped up a quick peanut butter and jelly sandwich with a glass of milk. Sat down to watch an episode of 24.

6:10pm

I had started to get a headache and it was getting hard to concentrate on the show.

6:20pm

Show ended and I made my way to bed, attempting to take a nap and get rid of the headache.

8:30pm

Puked my head was hurting so much.

9:30pm

Casey got home from work and I called him into my room to get me a cold wash cloth for my head. Explained I wasn’t feeling good and then I said this series of things…

Can you turn the heat up?

It’s on 38 right now, but you can turn it up to 300.

…Pause…

Wait, that didn’t make sense, turn it down to 18.

9:45pm

Casey’s girlfriend Maggie comes over. He tells her I have a really bad headache and don’t make any sense. He comes back to check on me and ask if I want him to take me to the hospital. I try to ask him to go pickup a thermometer to check my temperature, but I can only form the word “thunder”.

10:00pm

Tom comes home from work and picks up a thermometer on the way. My temp is 96.6, 2 degrees lower than normal body temperature. Tom decides we’re heading to the emergency room and they get me going. My head is pounding and it hurts to move. I can’t talk and am moving very slow. The look on everyone’s faces was one I’ve never seen before. They were worried.

10:15pm

We get to the emergency room and the check-in lady starts asking me questions. With my head pounding it’s very hard to concentrate on what people are saying. When I’m asked a question I know what I want to say, but I can’t think of the words, so I sit there thinking. Finally after not being able to come up with the words, I forget what I was asked and say, “What?” I couldn’t spell my name, come up with my birthday, or anything. Tom and Casey had to answer all of the questions for me. Tom said my skin color was unlike anything he’s ever seen. The lady at check-in determines I need a room NOW.

10:30pm

I have no problem signing my name for them to start treatment. They take blood and start an IV. I piss in a cup. The Doctor asks me what drugs I took or how much I had to drink. They think I’m drunk or overdosed on something. I get a cat scan. They take a strep throat test. I curl into a ball while sitting, to get a lumbar puncture (spinal tap), which I think was some type of test for spinal meningitis and hurt like a bitch! Tom calls my parents and they start the over 2 hour drive from Rogers City to Saginaw. None of the tests find anything wrong, my blood pressure and pulse are fine. I’m still having a really hard time forming sentences and my head is still pounding, especially when I move at all.

12:30am

The nurse finally gives me some Tylenol and lets me have some water after only allowing ice chips. Mom and Dad had called my brother Isaac and he shows up at the hospital. I’m starting to be able to talk a little bit.

1:30am

I’m discharged, but I didn’t want to leave because my head hurts whenever I move too much. Mom and Dad are just getting to town and get to my house shortly after we do. We all talk at home and I’m still having a little trouble saying what I want to. It’s as if parts of my brain don’t want to function.

2:00am

I go to sleep on the couch because I don’t want to deal with the head pain of walking up stairs. I set the heat to 68. I have on shorts, t-shirt, socks, sweats, sweatshirt, and a big comforter. Throughout the night I finally start to warm up and tear off layers, then finally turn the heat down. My headache goes away.

8:30am

I wake up and make myself breakfast sausage patties with waffles while everyone else is still in bed. I’m starving! My temperature is still at 96.6 degrees, but at least I don’t feel like I’m freezing anymore. I was still a little slow in the head for most of the day Thursday, but was feeling much better.

3:30pm

I nap for nearly 2 hours on the couch.

Friday

I see my family Doctor and he thinks I had a really bad migraine headache. He refers me to a neurologist who I see on May 7th. I’m feeling 100% even though my temperature is only back to 97.4 degrees.

It was definitely a scary and weird experience. I was laughing at myself at times because I was getting so mad I couldn’t say the words I wanted to. I knew I didn’t make sense. I couldn’t come up with any numbers either. The Doctor and nurses kept asking me a time table of events and the only time I could say was 12:30. I knew the time of day in my head but couldn’t come up with the numbers to go with the time. I knew what was going on the entire time, but I just couldn’t concentrate on anything. I’m interested to see what the neurologist says about the whole thing because I sure don’t want this to happen again.

Booked Sunday

An hour ago I didn’t have any plans set in stone for the weekend. Now my Sunday is booked solid. First, my Dad invited me up to play a golf course in Harrisville called Loggers Trace at 12:30. He has some type of connection and we are golfing for free. Can’t argue with that so I said “Yes” right away. As I looked at Google Maps to find out where it was, I noticed Hubbard Lake was only about 30 minutes away from Harrisville. The light bulb went off over my head and while chatting with Mo we decided to meet at 9am and bike around the 23 miles around the lake. After looking at the maps a little closer we probably could have pushed it back to 9:30 and I’d still have enough time to find the golf course, but I’d rather have more time than I need so that I can clean up a bit and find some food. I love packing a lot into a short little summer day trip like this. Keeps me active and busy.

Merry New Birthday

It’s been awhile. Too long. The last post I made was December 16th, which I believe is the longest period without activity since the blog launched over two years ago. I’ve missed Christmas, my 26th birthday (12/26), and the New Year. I even missed the 2 year anniversary of MtDewVirus, which would have been on November 22nd.

I hope everyone had great holidays with their family and friends. I know I did. It wasn’t very eventful, but it was how I wanted to spend my vacation. I haven’t spent much time on computers in the last couple of weeks and it’s been a nice break. I spent a little over a week at my parents and I checked my email less in that time than I would in a single day. In fact, I’m still catching up. I still have over 800 unread items in my RSS reader, but I’m slowly getting back to normal.

I played way too much Xbox 360 over Christmas break, but I had fun doing it. I just wanted to relax and sit on my ass. Mission accomplished!

Not only did I not post here at MDV for nearly a month, I didn’t post on any of my other blogs during this time either. This is something that definitely needs to change. Blogging has become a big part of my life and a 2nd income that I don’t want to go away, so it’s time to get back into gear. I have some ideas for the new year and other things that have been on my to-do list for awhile, so hopefully I can make some time.

On Sunday I’m leaving for San Francisco to attend MacWorld. I’m excited to see San Fran, get some Mac training, and eat seafood every day we’re there. A little layover in Las Vegas on the way home should be one of the highlights as well.

At the end of the month I’ll be moving to a new apartment at the complex I lived in 2 years ago. After all of the bills it’ll cost about the same per month that I pay now. But…it’s much bigger (with a basement), I don’t have to mow the lawn or shovel snow, it has a dishwasher, is closer to everything, is safer, and on and on. I’m not quite sure why I ever moved away now that I look at the situation. There are a couple of things which persuaded me to move.

  1. About a month ago 2 people were killed in a bar 5 blocks from my current residence.
  2. Just before I left for the holidays someone was in my SUV somehow and stole my FM transmitter.
  3. My gas/electric bill for last month was $230! I have a very small 2 bedroom duplex with only one floor. Ridiculous is the only word that comes to mind.

As you can see I’ve been busy, but relaxed as well. I want to come up with a post or two reflecting on the past year, but I’m not promising anything.

A Sporting Thanksgiving

As posted previously, I attended a few professional sports events over the Thanksgiving holiday. Last Wednesday (Nov. 23) my parents left Rogers City bright and early. I’m not sure why they came down so early, but I wasn’t too happy that they interrupted my Xbox 360 time since I had just hooked it up the night before. Luckily they went off to do a little shopping and I had a little more time by myself. We met up with my brother and ate lunch at the mall.

Warning! This post might be a novel since it’s been weeks since my last “real” update.

Wings, Lions, and Pistons

My Dad, brother, and I were planning on getting some tickets for the Lions Thanksgiving game this year, so I’ve been keeping an eye on eBay. It looked like it was going to be at least $300 for 3 tickets to the game, and those aren’t even for the good seats.

Yesterday I found a dream come true. There was an auction selling 3 tickets to the Detroit Red Wings vs. Colorado Avalanche game on the 23rd, Detroit Lions vs. Atlanta Falcons game on the 24th, and Detroit Pistons vs. Washington Wizards game on the 25th. The auction had a But It Now price of only $550 with free shipping! After getting the seller to confirm that the tickets were all seated together I bought them quicker than Joey Harrington can make a dump off pass. None of the tickets are in great locations, but each of the venues have pretty good seats no matter where you sit.

Is that going to be one hell of a Thanksgiving or what? Talk about a sports dream! Seeing the Red Wings live at Joe Louis Arena is awesome, Ford Field is a great place to watch a football game, and the Pistons are always exciting. I’ll miss out on my favorite meal of the year, but it’ll be worth it.

I'm Back

It’s been over a week since I posted. I had a great time on my golf trip, but I’ve been busy since I came back. I’m still tired out and my back is sore each morning when I crawl out of bed. I haven’t played golf since the trip and I doubt I will for at least another week…I’m all golfed out. 108 holes and 30 hours of sun over 3 days will do that to a person.

Today my brother starts his freshman year of college here at SVSU and my sister starts her first full-time teaching position up in Onaway, MI. I’m proud of them both and I’m sure they’ll do great.

Over the last week I’ve watched a few movies, so look for some reviews. I hope to get back into a regular blogging schedule now that things have settled down.

A Little Shopping

Heather and Mom are visiting for the weekend, so we made a trip to the outlets in Birch Run yesterday. My plan was to buy some new polo shirts and maybe a few other things. I ended up spending over $300 on new clothes and shoes! What can I say? I’m a sucker for shopping. Most of the total was spent on two new pairs of Dr. Marten’s, one brown and one black. It’s hard to pass up a few nice pairs of shoes, especially when I actually find my size 14. The $80 price tag per pair was hard to pass up as well. Other than the shoes, I bought 5 polo shirts, 2 nice t-shirts, a pair of jeans, a pair of shorts, and one of those shirts you keep wrinkly. It really has been a long time since I’ve done any clothes shopping, so it felt good to buy some new clothes.

We ended up going out to Red Lobster for dinner after shopping. Is that place the best restaurant on Earth or what?
