Hamilton

Last fall, a Facebook ad for Hamilton popped up. It was coming to Detroit and I’d always heard people rave about the show, so I bought us tickets as a Christmas present.

Brandi and I had never been to a musical (or even a play), so we didn’t have any expectations. On Saturday we drove down to the Fischer Theatre in Detroit for the 2pm show. What an incredible building, with staircases you could get lost in. Our tickets were in the first row of the Balcony and we had no problem seeing any of the action.

…the music draws heavily from hip hop, as well as R&B, pop, soul, and traditional-style show tunes.

We were absolutely blown away. The singing and rapping was a little hard to understand from our seats at times, but it was so well done. The choreography of all of the actors really caught our attention too. It was cool how the action from scene to scene kept going, with actors always moving around props.

If you get a chance, go see Hamilton. We definitely won’t hesitate to see it again.

2018 Maker Faire Detroit

Yesterday I went to Maker Faire Detroit again with my brother, since we had such a good time last year. Unfortunately we were both very disappointed because it was almost exactly the same as last year. Same vendors, same makers, same companies, same activities. Everyone’s booths were even in almost the identical locations as last year. Guess we won’t be going back next year. 😦

2017 Maker Faire Detroit

On Sunday I spent almost 6 hours at the Henry Ford Museum for Maker Faire Detroit. It was a great venue for it because attendees had access to the museum as well.

Maker Faire is a gathering of fascinating, curious people who enjoy learning and who love sharing what they can do. From engineers to artists to scientists to crafters, Maker Faire is a venue for these “makers” to show hobbies, experiments, projects.

We call it the Greatest Show (& Tell) on Earth – a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity, and resourcefulness.

Glimpse the future and get inspired!

It was inspiring to see all of the makers and I had a blast geeking out.

Goodbye Joe

Last night I attended one last Detroit Red Wings game at Joe Louis Arena with some friends. Next year the team will be moving to the brand new Little Caesars Arena. They lost 5-4 to Toronto, but the team is rebuilding and it’s been a down year, so it wasn’t that surprising. It’s just a little bittersweet that the final year at “The Joe” is the first year since the 1989-90 season that the Wings will miss the playoffs. I don’t really know a spring without them playing after the regular season; I was 10 years old the last time this happened!

I’ve been to several games over the years and have posted about some of them on this blog:

My Mom is a big Wings fan, so I took her to a playoff game in 2015…

The NHL game has changed a lot throughout this Red Wings playoff streak. A former player, Kris Draper, recently published an excellent article titled There Will be Blood to The Players’ Tribune, which tells stories that contributed to many of the changes.

There have also been some strikes and lockouts during the playoff streak. Due to the lockout during the 2004-05 season I was able to experience one of my favorite professional sports related memory. On New Year’s Eve that year, my Dad and I found ourselves playing poker with Darren McCarty in a St. Ignace casino. If it hadn’t been for the lockout he never would have been there.

So there have been a lot of great Red Wings memories and visits to Joe Louis Arena. It was fun to get in one last trip. Detroit hockey is long overdue for a new home as the building is quite old and outdated. Every guy who has been there can tell you how weird it is to piss in the community trough urinals. Compared to any arena these days, it really is a shit hole.
