New Toys

Today I bought a new electric razor on Ebay. I went with a Norelco Advantage 6737XB, since it’s one of the best models made my Norelco. My Remington just hasn’t been treating me too well anymore, so it was time for a change. Suprisingly I was the only person to bid on the auction. It went for $70 and the razor sells for over $120 in the stores, so I’d say I got a pretty good deal on it.

I’m also finally moved over to my new computer as my main box. I finished installing all of my software today and then moved an extra NIC and HD over from the old computer. The next step is to get Linux running on the old box and I’ll be all set! I also need to find time to figure out what is wrong with my brother’s computer. I think the motherboard may be shot. I hate figuring out hardware problems!

Gallery Upgrade

I just finished upgrading the Photos section of the site to use Gallery 1.4.2. The only reason I upgraded was because they had found a pretty big security hole in the previous versions of the software. I didn’t feel like having someone hack into my web server. The upgrade went pretty smoothly, except that I’ve lost all the hard work I put into hacking the Gallery code to make it valid XHTML 1.1. Oh well!

You’ll notice some design changes with it since I decided to use a portion of one of the skins that came with the new version. Gallery is a great piece of software, but I just wish they had worked a little bit at using some standard code. The first time I installed Gallery I took at least a few hours to hack the code so that it would all validate XHTML 1.1. I think I’m going to leave it this time around…at least for the time being. I’d rather get Windows installed on my new server (I had initially put Linux on it) so that I can install Linux on my old PC. The server is just too much power to have Linux sitting on it when all I really want to do is play around with Linux. It’s much smarter to harness that power for my main machine.

Running Linux

My new server, with Linux installed, is up and running. I’m making this post from it right now as a matter of fact. It will take me some time to get used to it and learn my way around. It’s been a few years since I’ve had a Linux box, so there is quite a bit new and different. If anyone knows any good sites for tutorials and configurations, let me know.

A New Puter

I ordered a new computer today from Dell. They have a pretty sweet deal going on right now for a server. It has a free upgrade from a Celuron processor to a Pentium 4 2.26 GHz, comes with a 40 GB hard drive, and all the basics. It doesn’t come with any software, but I plan to install Linux on it, so that’s not a big deal. The only real thing it needs is a memory upgrade since it comes with a wimpy 128 MB. I should be able to pick up 512 MB for under $100. So it cost me $423 for the server, has a $100 mail in rebate, and free shipping. After purchasing the extra memory it’ll cost me about $400 for the new computer. My tax refund will be put to good use! 🙂

Good As New

I just finished rebuilding my computer, which in simple terms means that I cleaned off the hard drive, reinstalled Windows XP and all of my programs. I had been way overdue. Usually I try to rebuild it about every 6 months, but this time it had been over a year!! With the number of different/new programs I try on a daily basis, problems were starting to appear everywhere and I just couldn’t stand it anymore! Now my system is running like a well-oiled machine and I can get back to cranking out new features for mtdewvirus.com.

Make sure to stop by the weblog and photolog and leave some comments!!

Computer Box

This is a true story…

As most of you know, I work for the Help Desk at SVSU. A few weeks ago we were cleaning the Nachi virus off of computers for students who lived on campus. A co-worker of mine told a female student that we only needed her to bring in the box of her computer, we didn’t need the cables, mouse, etc.

Later that day, she showed up at our office with her cardboard computer box in hand. One of our student employees opened the box, expecting to see her computer inside so that he could record the serial number. When all he found was an empty box, he immediately walked into the back room because he was about to burst out laughing.

How she thought we could clean the virus from her computer with just a piece of cardboard is beyond me!!
