WordPress Plugin: Last Modified

While working on my new Poker Chip Tricks site, I had the need to show the date and time that a post was last modified. I didn’t feel like looking around on the WP site to see if a plugin was already written, so I wrote my own. It’s just a simple little plugin, but it does exactly what I want it to. You can find it along with all of the other plugins that I’ve written. Enjoy!

Comments Posted Elsewhere

It’s been awhile since I’ve released any WordPress plugins or even worked on any for that matter. But today, I’m releasing a new one called Comments Posted Elsewhere. You can find it in the WP Plugins Repository here. The entire idea for this one goes out to Neil Uchitel who came to me with the idea.

The basic idea behind the plugin is to keep track of where you post comments on other blogs. Basically mini linkage to posts you found interesting enough to comment on. You can see it in use at Neil’s blog (right hand column) and I plan to implement it here soon enough. Neil has done all of the testing and has written a tutorial on how to use it. The plugin was written by yours truly and is nothing more than a modification of my Recent Comments plugin. Enjoy!

Workin' It

Today was one of the best days at work that I’ve had in a long time. It flew by because of this, so that was an added bonus. About 2 months ago I was assigned the task of HEAT Administrator for our Help Desk. No added pay or job title, just another responsibility. HEAT is our call logging system, which communicates with an SQL server as the back-end. I love getting my hands in this type of stuff.

Digital Fortress

Digital Fortress : A ThrillerAnother great one by Dan Brown, but ranks 3rd of the three I’ve read so far. This one is a thriller based around the Cryptology department of the NSA. One of the agency’s former employees has created an unbreakable encryption algorithm and threatens to release it to the world if the NSA does not let the country know about their super code breaking computer. As you might guess, things take a turn for the worse.

The character development is very well done, just like Brown’s other books, but it wasn’t as interesting. Some of the computer stuff was obviously interesting to me, but the plot didn’t feel right at times. He spent way too much time going back to the relationship between two of the main characters in the book. Most of it could have been left out.

After reading this 3rd book by Brown I’ve realized a few things:

  • They all take place in a 24-48 hour period.
  • Short chapters are the way to tell a good story.
  • Brown uses 3-4 different parts of the story all at once, but in seperate chapters. This keeps you reading. For instance, you are reading about part 1 and when you finish the chapter, you have to read a few more chapters before getting back to part 1. while you are reading these other chapters, the same thing happens. You never want to put the book down!
  • I love reading about code breaking in his books.

I give Digital Fortress a B+.
