Where Now?

I’ve been playing poker just about every night, but haven’t felt like writing about it. I’ve pretty much hit that point where I can play $2/4 limit hold’em on auto-pilot, so there really isn’t anything to make for good reading.

Early in the week I started to clear my bonus ($425) on UB. I was winning, but nothing spectacular. There are many more rocks playing on UB, so you have to wait for your big hands and hope someone pays you off. For a couple of days of play I cleared nearly $70 in bonus funds and made about the same amount at the tables. After a short time of playing UB last night I just couldn’t take it anymore. The software only lets you play 3 tables at once and there were only 4 tables of 10-handed $2/4 running at any given time. Not exactly what I’m used to. Add in the fact that the VP$IP of the tables are rarely over 30%, if even 25%, and it gets boring pretty quickly. I needed some action.

From Tilt to Party

Throughout this post I’ll be making a lot of sarcastic comments regarding online poker being rigged. This is due to the recent comments I’ve received on the post I just linked to. For the record I do not think online poker is rigged in any way, shape, or form.

After finishing off the Poker Stars bonus last week I decided to hit up Full Tilt Poker next where I had $50 in bonus funds waiting to be earned. Bad decision. I don’t like Full Tilt for a lot of reasons.

Poker Stars: A Hate/Love Relationship

After clearing the Empire bonus last weekend I decided to make Poker Stars the next stop on my bonus whoring tour. I’d need 600 FPP to clear the $120 bonus.

On Monday night I fired up Poker Stars and went looking for $0.50/1 tables. The first thing I noticed was there weren’t many full tables to choose from. Next, I noticed the tables were much tighter than those found at Party Poker. Oh well, we’ll give it a shot.

Fly Like an Eagle

Fly like an eagle

Let my spirit carry me

Steve Miller – Fly Like an Eagle

Saturday was my brother’s 18th birthday and he wanted to play some live poker. The Soaring Eagle Casino in Mt. Pleasant is the only Michigan casino that doesn’t have an age limit of 21, so Isaac and my Mom made a day trip down. The plan was to meet them there in the afternoon, but they weren’t leaving Rogers City until 2:00, so I decided to head over earlier. Ever since Soaring Eagle opened the poker room last February I’ve been talking about going to play with my friend Dave from work. It’s only about a 45 minute drive from Saginaw for me and less than a half hour for him from Midland, so it’s actually pretty sad we’ve hadn’t gone yet.

Making Progress

Or am I?

On Tuesday night I finally cleared the 2250 raked hands for the MultiPoker signup bonus. It took me a week. Ridiculous! I’m definitely not taking advantage of the reload bonus they’re running right now. 20x raked hands. That’ll take forever. Tuesday was one of those nights where you wonder how you don’t lose your whole bankroll. I couldn’t get a hand to hold up. Big slick only flopped top pair once out of 8 times. Mrs. Slick did it one out of four. Cowboys were 0-2 as were the ladies. I played for a about three hours or so. Finally around midnight I cleared the bonus and cashed out. Considering how my good starting hands performed, I was glad to only lose 20 big bets for the session. During my stay at MultiPoker I finished $0.04 ahead. Woohoo!! I was up over 70 BB about halfway through the bonus clearing, but went a little downhill from there.

Fold'em Cowboys

Today I folded KK pre-flop without anyone raising before me. Doh! I was playing 4 tables at the time and hit the fold button on the wrong table. When the flop came JJK I felt sick because one other player was betting his Jack. I’ve been 4-tabling for a few months and haven’t made any mistakes like that previously. At the time I was arguing with a player at one of the other tables so I wasn’t fully paying attention when I should have. Maybe I should just turn chat off.

Review: Winning Low-Limit Hold'em

Winning Low-Limit Hold'em (2nd Edition)Lee Jones did a good job writing Winning Low Limit Hold’em. The book is a solid 193 pages of information for low limit Texas Hold’em players. If I hadn’t read SSH and ITH, I would have really been impressed, but WLLH was pretty much the same information, but just a shorter format.

Jones breaks the book down into two main sections titled Hold’em: The Game and Play of the Hand from Deal to Showdown. The first section goes over fundamentals, reading the board, and odds. It’s your basic Texas Hold’em primer. The next section of the book gives strategies for playing through a hand. This second half is the real meat and potatoes. It covers playing pre-flop from all different positions, playing the flop according to what type of hand you make, and then how to proceed on from there. It’s all broken down through the course of how a hand progresses, which makes the advice all mesh together.

As I mentioned, I didn’t get anything out the book that I hadn’t already read in other texts, but it’s always nice to reinforce the strategies I’ve read from other authors. If you’re looking for a good beginner book, WLLH will do the job. It’s a quick read and easy to follow, but I’d recommend SSH over it any day. Sklansky, Malmuth, and Miller put together the bible of low limit hold’em when they wrote Small Stakes Hold’em: Winning Big With Expert Play.

Bonus Clearance & Bankroll Buildance

Just a quick post for an update of the last two days.

In addition to hitting royal flush #6 on Tuesday I was able to clear about 400 more raked hands for the Party Poker bonus. In the process I also took down a profit of $20. Nothing spectacular, but always better than a losing day.

Last night I had to split my play up in order to go out to Hooter’s with some friends. Wednesday is All-You-Can-Eat wings and fries for $8.95! Before dinner I was crushing the $0.50/1 tables and sorry I had to leave. In addition, I only needed to play another 90 raked hands to finish off the bonus. After dinner I jumped back into the fish bowl and was down early. I hit a few big hands and turned another profit. It didn’t take long to clear the bonus and I logged off right after. After 4 solid days of play I cleared the required 1400 raked hands and $200 of bonus cash was transferred to my account.

In addition to the bonus I took another $187 in profit from the tables for a total of $387. Not bad hey! I’m still leaving money on the table at times though. If a bluff doesn’t work right away I need to learn to give it up. Accepting defeat is never easy though.

Since starting my bankroll over at $300 I’ve been able to find my zone again at the tables. I’m starting to “feel” my way through hands, which is a good sign. With the help of a few bonuses and winning days at the tables my bankroll is back up to nearly $800. Only $200 more and I’m moving back to the $1/2 tables.

I won’t be playing any online poker until at least Monday with the Easter weekend. The next stop on my bonus whoring tour is MultiPoker.
