Only One OT

We had our second basketball game last night. It only went into one overtime and we came out on top by 1 point. The way we started the game I thought we were going to blow them out. Of course our shooting went cold, almost as cold as my cards have been in poker over the past 3 weeks. We were losing at the half and finally caught back up. The score went back and forth, but we couldn’t get a stop on defense at the right times to take a lead. The team we were playing was mostly older men, but could they ever shoot! It was lights out.

With about 15 seconds left in regulation and the score tied, one of our guys got a steal and took off down court for a wide open layup. He thought he heard a whistle and ended up missing the layup. Their team gets the rebound and calls a timeout with 11 seconds on the clock. It didn’t take them long to get it up court and drain a shot. We’re down by 2. Timeout! In the huddle we basically just said to get open.

Hoop It Up

Had our first township basketball league game tonight. We lost in the third overtime to a 3 pointer at the buzzer. Our team had 6 guys and they had at least 10. Each of their players were younger than ours. We were down by 12 points at halftime. We should have never gotten back into the game. We will only get better as the season progresses and we get a few more of our players.

I shot two threes during the game and hit nothing but air on both of them. I can barely feel my legs, have a bruise on my knee, whacked my head on the floor, and nearly puked playing basketball for the first time in my life. I might just be a little out of shape. Bare with me…I like to complain when I’m hurting.

The good news is that when we have our full squad, it’s a much better team than we had last year.

Disturbing News Items

The big story in the news over the past few days has been the fight that broke out between players and fans during the NBA game between the Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers. Artest got his wish with a season long suspension and will now have plenty of time to work on his rap album. I’m glad to see him go, but I feel bad for the Pacers organization, because their season is all but over.

A much more disturbing story comes from Wisconsin though, where 5 hunters were killed and 3 others injured. If all happened when two hunters were returning to their cabin and noticed somebody in one of their tree stands. After both men were wounded, they radioed back to the cabin for help. The suspect then shot the other hunters who came to help, including a woman and teen-age boy.

What is this world coming to?

NCAA Basketball Top 25

ESPN.com has 4 ACC teams ranked in their preseason top 10 and Duke in the next group at #14. Think the ACC doesn’t dominate college basketball? Think again.

I was disappointed when Luol Deng went pro and one of the top high school players in the country decided to pass up Duke for the NBA, but they still have a good nucleus of talent. J.J. Redick is one of the top shooters in the nation, if not the best. “The landlord” Shelden Williams matured into one of the premier big men in the country last year. Daniel Ewing is a great scorer and good shooter when he finds the touch. Sean Dockery and Shavlik Randolph are the two question marks on their starting five. They have the potential to be great players, but time will tell. Randolph made some great improvements last year so I think he’ll be fine. Dockery is a force on defense as a great on the ball defender.

I’ll bet that Duke sneaks into the top 5 at least once during the season. Dick Vitale even has the Blue Devils ranked #9 in his preseason top 30. It’ll be tough in the ACC for any team to remain at the top though. North Carolina, Wake Forest, and Georgia Tech all have some great talent, with Georgia Tech really showing it during March Madness last year. Maryland returns a team that won the ACC tournament last year and with Gary Williams at the helm they can’t be forgotten in this mix.

I’m getting chills just thinking about the season! Is it really a month away?

Luck The Fakers

I heard it would be a sweep by the Lakers. I heard it would be Lakers in 5, 6, or 7. I never heard once that it would be the Pistons winning the NBA Championship. I believed in Detroit and they came through. It was the Pistons who had the sweep, if it weren’t for a miracle shot by Kobe to put game 2 into overtime, which the Lakers ended up winning.

Everyone said the Pistons couldn’t score enough points to keep up with the Lakers, but it was the Pistons who scored 100 points tonight in a blowout to end the series. It was the Lakers who couldn’t score enough points in the series to keep up.

Larry Brown is an amazing coach and his game plans to stop the Lakers worked to a T. Defense wins championships and this team was a defensive team if there ever was one. It may have been the most dominating performance ever in the NBA Finals.
