nick.blog

dot-blog

When we purchased the .blog TLD (think .com), each Automattician was allowed to select their own domain.blog for free. We had to promise to use it as the primary domain of a site and post at least once a month. Piece of cake.

I have the most years of any Nick at Automattic, so was able to get nick.blog! Not sure if I’m prepared for the Internet fame. Due to a trademark I had to wait through a grace period after the .blog public launch. It didn’t get purchased so it’s finally mine and active as my new domain.

You can still type in nickmomrik.com and it’ll properly redirect, becoming part of a growing list of domains:

  • nickmomrik.wordpress.com
  • nickmomrik.org
  • nickmomrik.net
  • nicholasmomrik.com
  • mtdewvirus.com
  • momrik.com
  • momrik.blog

7 Years with Great People

Today marks the start of my 8th year with Automattic. When I started on March 13, 2008 I joined a group of 20 great people and I still work with 15 of them.

Some friends and family questioned leaving a stable job at SVSU for a startup based out of San Francisco. During the hiring process, which took about a month, I spent less than an hour on the phone and never sat face-to-face with anyone from the company. People couldn’t really comprehend this or the fact that I’d work from anywhere I wanted on my own hours. Turned out to be the best decision of my life.

Automattic, which will turn 10 this year, hired the 1st employee on June 20, 2005 and currently has 306 great people around the world. If you’re a great person and want to make the web a better place, come work with us.

Loving Work is Possible

If you asked me four years ago if I thought it were possible to enjoy working, I’d be dubious. If you asked me whether one could ever genuinely love and respect all their coworkers, I’d hesitate. Over the past four years, the people of Automattic have demonstrated to me that it’s possible to do work […]

Out of Bacon

I walked downstairs this morning and found no bacon had been cooked for breakfast. I didn’t run into any other Automatticians on the way. It was almost 9am when I crawled out of bed this morning. I never sleep that late anymore. Yesterday afternoon I got home from Park City, Utah, where I had spend a week at Automattic‘s once-a-year Grand Meetup. I always take an extra day off work to recover from the highs and lows of the trip, so today I’ll be able to catch up on things around the house and come back down to Earth.

Matt, Lori, and others have written more, so I won’t say much. Going into the week I had met about 160 Automatticians.

I can’t wait for the next opportunity to meet more and get to know everyone better. Every meal, flash talk, conversation, introduction, ping pong game, workshop, and activity felt like eating tasty bacon. I’m out of bacon, which is always depressing.
