I ordered a new computer today from Dell. They have a pretty sweet deal going on right now for a server. It has a free upgrade from a Celuron processor to a Pentium 4 2.26 GHz, comes with a 40 GB hard drive, and all the basics. It doesn’t come with any software, but I plan to install Linux on it, so that’s not a big deal. The only real thing it needs is a memory upgrade since it comes with a wimpy 128 MB. I should be able to pick up 512 MB for under $100. So it cost me $423 for the server, has a $100 mail in rebate, and free shipping. After purchasing the extra memory it’ll cost me about $400 for the new computer. My tax refund will be put to good use! 🙂
…my life. There is no question about it. I do all of my banking and pay most of my bills online. I store all phone numbers in my cell phone. Any addresses I need to remember are stored in my email address book. I schedule all of my appointments on the calendar in my email system. Everyone’s birthday is stored in this calendar as well. At home I use ATnotes which allows me to have Post-It style notes right on my computer’s desktop, instead of all over my desk on little pieces of paper.
I use the Internet to look up everything from movie times, driving directions, phone numbers, and sports scores. I order clothes, toys, and computer equipment online. I did my taxes online. Sometimes, I talk to people online with the use of Instant Messengers instead of calling them. I communicate with my Mom and Dad through daily emails.
What would happen to my life is something happened to my phone and I lost access to computers? I’d be lost. I wouldn’t be able to get ahold of anyone. I wouldn’t know my schedule for the week. I’d forget everyone’s birthday. Seriously…what did people do 20 years ago? I can’t imagine life without the Internet and everything that computers allow us to do.
I had a random thought today…
Dialing 9-1-1 is supposed to be for emergencies, but what exactly is an emergency? When I thought about this, I was walking out to my car after playing basketball and thought, “what if my car window was smashed?” Is that an emergency? I need to call the police to file a report and I don’t know any other number to call, so 911 would make the most sense to me. Am I in danger? Probably not, but do you need to be in danger to have an emergency?
Just something to think about…
We had another game for basketball league tonight. The opposing team scored 25 points and yours truly had 21 himself. We beat them 32-25. As a team we played pretty horrible, as you can tell by the lack of scoring by the rest of the team. But that is what a superstar is for…right? 😉 My shot was dead on tonight and it felt great. I hit a couple of threes (one for a 4 point play), made 4-5 free throws and hit a sweet jumper when I was on a fast-break with no help. I won’t do any talking during the game, but after the game (like right now) is another story.
The team we played was tied with us for first place, so I think we now have sole possesion of it and are on a 5 game winning streak. In the 2nd half of the game, they changed to a man-to-man defense and that really threw us off. We only ended up scoring 9 points in the 2nd half, but held them also. If it had come down to free-throws at the end of the game, we would have lost. We were in the bonus with 5 minutes left and never hit the front end of a one-and-one.
Mark another one in the win column.
The Super Bowl is today, but I’m not all that thrilled about it. I’m not a fan of the teams, but I don’t hate them either. I would have liked to see Payton Manning and the Colts make it to the big show, but the cold New England weather did them in against the Patriots. I guess I’ll root for the Panthers simply because they are the underdogs. I have some pretty good numbers for the usual Super Bowl squares that everyone does for betting. The pot is $125 per quarter, so it would be nice to win one or maybe even two! These are my numbers:
Patriots Panthers 7 3 5 2 4 7 9 6 6 4
I swear that I’m obsessed with driving my car until I’m on E. I won’t pull into a gas station unless that little orange light comes on telling me that I soon might be stranded without gas. Am I the only one who does this? It’s not like I do it on purpose, I just never really notice my gas gauge until the orange warning light comes on. Sooner or later, I’m going to run out of gas and then I’ll learn my lesson.
While I’m on the subject of cars…more and more recently I’ll be driving and as soon as I get underneath a stoplight, I can’t recall if it was green or not. I know it was green, but for that split second or two, I ask myself if I was paying attention. Maybe I’m just getting old.
I’ve joined a social networking site called Orkut (thanks for the invite Matt). It’s a way to keep in touch with friends, meet new people, find dates, share ideas, and other things. You may have heard of sites such Friendster or Tribe.net, which are along the same lines. From what I’ve read, Orkut is supposed to improve on all of these other sites. Orkut is in affiliation with Google, so my guess is that it will turn out pretty good.
One major difference between these types of sites is that you have to be invited to join Orkut. Kind of a neat way to set it up. If you want an invite, let me know.
You have just won one million dollars:
- Who do you call first?
- What is the first thing you buy for yourself?
-A big house.
- What is the first thing you buy for someone else?
-Hunting property for Dad.
- Do you give any away? If yes, to whom?
-Hell no! I won it! I’ll buy a few things for other people, but there won’t be any giving it away.
- Do you invest any? If so, how?
-I’d pay someone to invest the money for me. What I pay them is based on how much they make for me. Gotta give them some type of motivation!
I had my interview today for the programmer/analyst position at the University. I think it went pretty well.
It didn’t get started until an hour after it was scheduled due to the fact the some of the programmers were working on a portion of the website for displaying tax information. If they had been interviewing someone outside of the department, I highly doubt they would have made them wait that long. But what can you do? It’s over now. Then about halfway through the interview a bird must have come in through the ventilation somehow and was walking around in the celing! So we moved to another room to finish up. It was interesting.
They should be making their decision in the next week.
