Royal Hold'em Notes

I’m messing around on UB with their new game Royal Hold’em just to have some fun. What’s Royal Hold’em?

Royal Hold’em is just like Texas Hold’em but with a twist. Only the best 20 cards from the deck are used (tens, jacks, queens, kings, and aces).

I even calculated the Royal Hold’em Odds earlier.

I’m no expert by any means, so don’t take what you read here as gospel. Just a few random thoughts I’m having while playing this crazy game of poker.

  • TT is a lot like 22 in regular hold’em. Except instead of flopping a set, you need to flop quads now. Fold the hand pre-flop unless you’re in the blinds.
  • JJ should be played very similar to TT.
  • Suited cards don’t matter at all. There is only one way to make a flush and it’s the royal flush. Forget about flushes.
  • If the board shows a straight on the river, you can’t lose by betting. Fire out a bet and the other player might accidentally hit the fold button. Do not raise if it’s bet to your or else you’re just contributing to the rake.
  • Flopping the nut straight is useless. If it’s bet, fold. If you’re last to act you can fire out one bet, but then you’re done with the hand.
  • Two pair is the equivalent of a high card hand in Texas Hold’em. Only worse.
  • You want to have the nuts. Don’t raise unless you have the nuts. Nut full houses, nut quads, and royal flushes are are the hands you want to end up with. Duh!
  • The only hands I raise pre-flop are AA and KK. It might not be correct to raise pre-flop with anything.
  • Calling a raise pre-flop is probably the worst thing you can do. Even with AA. It’s likely the other player is raising with AA, so then you’d have zero outs.
  • Everyone has at least one pair after the river. In fact, the lowest hand you can have is two pair. It just took me a full minute to think that over before typing it out.
  • Calling on the river without the nuts or 2nd nuts is not a profitable play
  • I wonder if it’s possible for anyone to actually win money at this game.
  • I have no idea what I’m talking about!

This might be my worst blog post ever, on any of my blogs!

  1. Play the premium hands, period! AA, KK. Marginal are AK, and QQ.. Otherwise, fold. That’s the only real successful strategy, especially since there are so many donkeys in online holdem. It isn’t that hard to win, if you keep this one rule in mind!
