Review: The Killers – Hot Fuss [LIMITED EDITION]

Hot FussJust last week The Killers won the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist. I’ve heard 3 of their songs on XM Radio over the last few weeks and really enjoyed the music, so I decided to buy the CD. Their most popular songs (with # from the CD) are:

  • 2. Mr. Brightside
  • 4. Somebody Told Me
  • 5. All These Things That I’ve Done

I’ve only listened to the album a few times but have enjoyed a number of the other songs. Hot Fuss is definitely a CD that you can feel good about buying. You don’t just get a CD where you’ll play one song over and over again. I give the album an A-.

Labor Day Weekend 2005

I had an enjoyable Labor Day weekend. On Friday night I went to The Dukes of Hazzard with my buddy Mo. Saturday morning I woke up early and drove down to Sterling Heights to hang out with a couple good friends, Lindsay and Jere. We went out golfing (shot a 44), watched the Michigan game, went out for burgers and beer, and then had a few at night. Nothing too exciting but once in awhile, those are the best times. Not much beats having a good time with your best friends.

Sunday afternoon I came back to Saginaw and just chilled around my apartment. Monday afternoon I went out golfing 18 (shot 46-48) with my brother and hit up the grocery store on the way home. I started to get a headache on the back 9 and as the night wore on it got worse. I was in bed by 10 for some much needed sleep. Today it’s back to work, but with no classes at SVSU it’s been a quiet day. I really like these long weekend.

Review: The Dukes of Hazzard

Dukes of Hazzard

The Dukes of Hazzard (Unrated Widescreen Edition)I remember watching the TV series all of the time as a kid. The Dukes and the General Lee were my heroes because they always saved the day. When I first heard a movie was coming out I was excited. I was even more excited when I saw the cast. Johnny Knoxville, Seann William Scott, Jessica Simpson, Burt Reynolds, and Willie Nelson all played big roles in the film.

Going into the movie I was expecting something entertaining. The Dukes of Hazzard delivered in that area as well as being pretty damn funny. Johnny Knoxville and Seann William Scott worked well together as the Bo and Luke Duke. Jessica Simpson was great eye candy in the role of Daisy Duke, but she does not have a future career in movies. I was a bit disappointed in the choice of Burt Reynolds for Boss Hogg. In the TV series, Boss Hogg was a shorty chubby guy where Reynolds is much taller and in reasonable shape.

If you were a fan of the original TV show you should enjoy the movie. Make sure you stay after the film and watch the credits for some bloopers. I give it a B+.

Review: Harrington on Hold'em – Volume I

Harrington on Hold'em: Expert Strategy for No Limit Tournaments (Strategic Play)I finally finished reading the best poker book available on tournament play. Dan Harrington has done the poker world a great service by writing Harrington on Hold’em. I would have finished the book much sooner, but it was my bathroom reader, so I was only reading 10-15 pages a day.

Harrington breaks down the game of no-limit just like any other author by pre-flop, flop, turn and river. What makes this book stand out though are the awesome Problems presented at the end of each chapter. Dan uses actually hands that he’s run into or observed over the years. He lays out the hand and then asks you questions along the way. He describes what you should be thinking as you make you decision. It’s great to see what a world class player and World Series of Poker Champion is thinking during a poker hand.

Volume I is a great book for any poker player of any level. The attention to details is fantastic and the book is easy to read. I can’t wait to get my hands on Volume II for some of the more advanced topics and moves.

Harrington on Hold’em: Expert Strategy for No Limit Tournaments (Strategic Play) definitely gets an A+ from me.

Bonus Whoring The Party Network

Over the long holiday weekend I bonus whored Empire Poker for their quick 3 day reload and then Party Poker. I’m a sucker for the free $100 each site gave me. Or are the poker sites the suckers?

Playing 4 tables of $25 No-Limit 6-max it took about 5 hours to clear the Empire Poker bonus. I was up, down, up, and down again. With only a couple of hands left to clear my bonus I was up $20 and felt good. I was going to log my first winning session in a week. I cleared the required number of raked hands and played out my orbits, which I always do. I was still up about $20. On the 2nd to last hand I pick up KK. The board wasn’t scary at all and I ended up losing to a slow-played AA. It felt like a kick in the junk. So much for that winning session. I finished down $2.90 for the 5 hours, but still made about $20/hour because of the $100 bonus.

Review: After the Sunset

After the Sunset (Widescreen Edition) (New Line Platinum Series)When renting a few movies last week I was asked if I wanted to grab a $1 rental for free. I turned around and After the Sunset was the first DVD I spotted, so I took it. The free movie turned out to be better than the two new releases which cost $2.50 each.

I’ve always liked Pierce Brosnan movies and this was no different. The cast also included a hot Salma Hayek, Woody Harrelson, and Don Cheadle. The action was good and the humor was laughable. It’s a typical theif vs. enforcement agent type of movie, but the comedy adds a nice touch. I give it a B.

Empty

Cheese BallsIt’s all Dr. Pauly‘s fault. I first read about the cheese balls on on his blog last Tuesday. Or is it Otis‘s fault? After all, he invented the holiday party Pauly was writing about. After reading about the cheese balls I got a craving. On Thursday of last week I finally broke down and picked up the 37.5 oz monster container from Sam’s Club. Let me tell you, those are some damn good cheese balls!

I finished off the container today and along with it went a $500 deposit that I made last week while eating the cheese balls and a $100 bonus I had earned during the same time. I swear, I didn’t have anything to do with the losses. The orange crunchy puffs of air brought about bad beats like I haven’t seen in a long time. Hands like AK were beat by A6, A3, and K3. Not on the flop either! Tonight the account which had the deposit finally hit zero. The last two hands went down like this…
