Well Paul, I don’t know, but I can imagine having a middle name makes quite a difference for the billions of John Smiths on this planet π It makes you more unique… That’s all I can think of.
It is often used to preserve the mother’s maiden name. Families that do this will usually give it to the first son but not always.
Sometimes a parent will commemorate a friend by middle-naming their child after the friend, but that’s kind of slighting isn’t it? “Sorry, you’re not good enough to name a kid after…”
My sister, brother, and I all have the middle name of our parent (Dad for us guys and Mom for my sister), but for every day use…I don’t have much for it.

All I can think of is that your parents could use your middle name to make sure you know you’re in trouble… π
