Pistons, Engines, Tires, And A Pink Shirt

I received a call from my buddy Jeff on Friday night asking if I’d be interested in a couple of Pistons tickets for Saturday night’s game. Jeff’s friend is a season ticket holder and couldn’t get rid of his seats for the game against the Bulls. I had plans to head down to Detroit on Sunday morning for the North American International Auto Show with Mo anyways, so we bought the tickets. I called my friend Lindsay and lined up a place to crash for the night.

On Saturday, I woke up to our biggest snow storm of the year. As I looked out the front window of my house all I saw was white. I couldn’t tell where the street was or anything. After running some errands and getting ready, Mo and I finally left around 2. For the first 10-15 minutes on I-75 the visibility was near 0 at times. I figured we were in for a ride to remember. What were were thinking anyways? Driving to Detroit in a blizzard!

The blowing snow soon stopped and the roads weren’t too bad. The main problem was that nobody knows how to drive in the snow in mid-Michigan. Here I was in my Grand Prix passing every SUV and 4-wheel drive vehicle on the road. I also found out that the plows must not work in the metro area. Five lane roads were turned into two lanes…three if you’re lucky. I had a few close calls when I was in the left lane passing vehicles and all of the sudden my lane disappeared. Once we were next to a semi/tanker and I remember saying, “I think my lane is disappearing.” It came back, but out of nowhere it was gone again and I’m plowing through 2 feet of snow. Still side-by-side with a vehicle that would eat my car as an appetizer.

We managed to make it to Sterling Heights without a scratch, but nearly got stuck pulling into the parking lot at Lindsay and Jere’s place. Off to bd’s mongolian barbeque for dinner with everyone. I’d only been there once before (on a trip to AZ) and hadn’t liked it at the time. I eat a lot of different foods now and WOW is this place good or what?!?!

I’m getting tired and am not in the writing mood, so the rest of this is going to be short and sweet…

After dinner, Mo and I headed back on the road to the Pistons game. We had good seats in the third row of the upper deck right behind the Pistons bench. More importantly though was the fact that we were right across from the chick in the pink shirt! H-O-T…HOT HOT HOT!! Whoever invented binoculars was a genius! The baskeball game was pretty boring, with the Pistons playing like shit and losing to the Bulls 100-89. If it weren’t for the girl in the pink shirt the game would have been extremely boring. She made it a little more exciting…or is it she just made me a little more excited? I did manage to take a few pictures during the game.

On Sunday morning, Jere, Mo, and I went to eat at Bob Evans for breakfast, which is definitely my favorite meal of the day. It’s just too bad that I only eat it about once a month. After breakfast, we headed over to the Detroit Auto Show. It was a great show all around, but it makes for a long day walking around Cobo Hall for 4 hours. I think they purposely crank the heat in that place so that you’ll leave quicker.

Some of the highlights from this year’s show (at least for me) were:

  • Seeing the new H3. They’re projecting the price to be in the 30’s and the gas mileage to be 16 and 20 for highway and city respectively.
  • Sitting in the back seat of an SUV with Gregory Kelser, the Pistons announcer and analyst.
  • All of the Ford Mustangs.
  • Pontiac’s new G6. The convertible was pretty sweet.
  • Concept cars, but when aren’t they a highlight?
  • Being 10 feet away from Coolio.
  • Checking out the XM radios.
  • Fully liquid crystal display dashboards.
  • The Dodge Charger.
  • Jaquar is releasing a car that will be in the 30’s.

I’ve posted 119 photos from the show. Some aren’t very good quality, you can get the idea.

That’s all I can think of right now, but I’m sure Jere and Mo will fill in the gaps on things that I forgot. You just see so much in 3-4 hours that you forget quickly. It was an impressive show and probably the best out of the three times that I’ve been there. The weather switched on Sunday when the sun came out and melted a lot of the snow, so the ride home was quick and easy. It was a fun weekend with some good friends.
