Poker Room Terminology

While playing poker at a casino for the first time I learned a lot of new poker terminology. Maybe this will benefit others before they play in a poker room for their first time.

Board

Common uses:

“Are you on the board for a game”

“The board is empty for 3-6 Hold’em”

Meaning:

The waiting list for a particular game. If the board is empty, there aren’t any players waiting for that game.

Service

Common uses:

Player asks the dealer, “Can I get service?”

Dealer yells “service.”

Card room announcer says “Service on 8.”

Meaning:

You want a waiter/waitress to come by so that you can order food or drinks. In the case with the number 8, they are asking for service on table 8.

Rack

Common uses:

Dealer yells “Rack of blue on 5”

Meaning:

A player at the table needs a rack of blue chips. A rack is a plastic holder that can fit 100 chips. The blue chips were $1 at Viejas. Again, the 5 is referring to the table number.

Double on (table number)

Common uses:

Dealer yells “I have a double on 11”

Meaning:

Two seats are open and the card room announcer needs to call some players from the board to fill the table.

Other uses:

Dealer yells “One on 11” or “Three on 11” depending on how many open seats they have.

Locked

Common uses:

Dealer tells a player “That seat is locked” if they try to sit down.

Card room announcer calls out “Lock up the seat on 7 for Tom.”

Meaning:

The seat at the table is saved for a player.

I’ll add more to the list as I remember them…
