Barry Sanders: Now You See Him

Barry Sanders: Now You See Him : His Story in His Own WordsI just finished reading this. What a great book! Barry Sanders is my favorite athlete to ever play a professional sport and I believe he is the greatest running back in history.

He was the definition of a team player on the field and an amazing human being off it. He never cared about breaking records or personal achievements while playing. He simply wanted to win football games and have fun doing it. When it wasn’t fun anymore, he left the game. Over the years he has been scrutinized for the way he left, but he did it his way and went out on his own terms. There isn’t a doubt in my mind that he would be one of the top players in the league today, if he was still playing.

Each time Barry go the ball, you held your breath. He could go the distance on any given play. He also made the most exciting short yardage runs I’ve ever seen. I grew up watching the Lions every week (and still do), and he was the reason. I even saw him play at the Silverdome quite a few times, including a playoff game. He really was something special.

By reading his book, I now have even more respect for the guy. He’s a genuince class act.

  1. I’ve got a funny Barry Sanders story to share…

My Aunt Janie lives in the same subdivision Barry lived in from the late 80’s to the early 90’s. My cousin Eric was only 7 or 8 at the time and played with the neighborhood kids in the sub. Barry was having a bunch of kids over to play baseball in his backyard and my cousin Eric wanted to go with his neighbors, so he went to ask my Aunt Janie if it was okay. Imagine this conversation and the embarrassement that followed:

Eric: Mom, is it okay if I go over to Barry Sander’s house to play baseball.

Janie: No it is not okay. You know the rules. You don’t go to anyone’s house unless I have met their parents and I get emergency numbers.

Eric: No mom it’s Barry Sanders!

Janie: I don’t care. You know the rules. No parents..

Eric: He doesn’t have parents! Mom…Barry Sanders!

Aunt Janie didn’t have a clue who Barry was and wouldn’t let Eric go over there. She really has never lived it down and Barry said he always got a kick out of what a good mom she was. 😀

Barry Sanders is my favorite player, his moves are lighting and i watched video clips of him the internet and a and interview on ESPN, one guy said hes so hard to tackle its like trying to catch a fly with one hand, and i heard on time when they were playing the players started complaing that he has greece on his jersey because hes hard to tackle, they stopped the game to check the jersey and the refs said no he has nothing, i was so amazed a guy that small was judged by size not talent and when he came into the NFL he tore it up. ;/

  8. Let me start by saying that Berry Saunders is the best running back ever. He got all his yards by himself without using the offensive line. But the most exciting aspect about Berry Saunders is his walk with God, I have redicated my life to God and that without a doubt is the most important story. May God bless and your family, your brother in Christ, Mr. Thar
