Homier Distributing Company BDM 5 Drill Press Restoration

My Dad gave me an old drill press that was sitting unused in his garage. Homier Distributing Company (HDC) made this BDM 5 model back in 1991. Over the years the machine accumulated a lot of rust, so I wanted to give it some new life.

It was a fun project and I really love how it turned out. It looks like a brand new tool.

I recorded a lot of video while working on this and tried to trim down to the important parts so I could explain the process I used.

If you have any questions or anything here helps you with a project of your own, leave a comment to let me know.

  1. Dude this is awesome. My father finally relinquished the tools he got from my grandfathers shop . It was not taken care of. It is this exact drill press from. 1987. I’m just getting started tonight. Any specific advice? Did you find a good and reliable spare parts place? Thanks in advance.

    • The process I used to clean up all of the rust, prime, and paint worked pretty well I think. I should have waited longer after painting (I was impatient) before putting it back together because it was a bit soft and I dinged up a few spots.

The only parts I had to buy were a few set screws from Home Depot. Works great!

  5. Hi Nick. Any idea on the thread size for the depth stop screw? I think the diameter is like 5/16″ or 8mm. Just don’t know the thread size. Thanks

  6. I am looking at this model on Craigslist. I cannot find the size of the drill press anywhere online. Could you tell me the swing measurement? Does anyone know a fair price to pay for a used one? Thanks for any help you can provide.

    • I’m currently reassembling the floor stand version on this drill press and the pictures I had of the electrical wiring disappeared. Do you have pictures available of the wiring inside the connection box and of inside, behind the rear cover? I completely disassembled the motor and all I have for connections are two red wires and the ground, but it seems like it’s missing a wire.

  7. Do you know what the nut does on the side of the body is for? It is opposite the side with the handle and near the front. Thanks so much. Great video!

    • If you’re talking about the single nut on the body, I think it has something to do with the spindle and quill. I don’t remember for sure though. Looks like I didn’t get video putting that back in! The nut on the big circle has the spring for the handle behind it.

  8. Good day sounds like you have had fun with this project. Did you remove the arbor tha makes the chuck travel up and down ? My BDM5 has frozen could you explain how it is removed to get the rust cleaned out and replace the brgs?

  9. Nice project! Thank-you for sharing the process. I’m looking at purchasing a used HDC drill press and was wondering how you feel on how true the chuck spins (noticeable run out). While there can be outliers (from dead true to super sloppy) within any manufacturer’s product line, I’m curious what you think about how “true” your HDC drill press chuck spins. Thanks for your time and consideration.
